So I just purchased a 2006
Boxster
with the Sound Package Plus system (not
Bose
) and it sounds like the larger door speakers are blown. These are the ones at the very bottom of the door, the mids above them sound ok. I’ve looked through a number of threads on here discussing upgrading these but honestly I’m fine with staying stock. So my question is, does anyone happen to have a set of the 8” door subs they have removed they would sell, or do you know the part number to search for on EBay to find a replacement?
The ASK amp powers the larger door speakers and is a fairly common failure point. That's probably more likely to be your issue rather than the speakers being physically blown.
It’s making the sound like if you put a plastic bag over a speaker (the other description would be a farting sound). Would an amp failure cause this?

I don't know for sure, but this guy does ASK amplifier repairs and I've read good things about his work. Try emailing him through his website: I'm sure he's familiar with all the failure modes.

Thanks! I’ll see what he can tell me.

Are both of them making the garbled noise? This would lead me to believe the amp over the speakers - the chance that both of them would blow is questionable... But, as the sound system will be down while the amp is out for repair - pulling the door card isn't that much work to check the speakers, and while it's apart there's no better time to tackle obscure little points like putting a squirt of lithium lube on the window mechanism pivots... Pull it in the garage, turn on the radio and grab a sipping beer - zen and the art of
Porsche
repair...
I can virtually assure you that the woofer foam surrounds have disintegrated as they did in my 09
Cayman
. The non
Bose
with Sound Package Plus woofer at the bottom of the door for me was 997-645-553-00. It is the same as used in the
911
's of the same vintage. You should verify fitment...If you take it out of the door mine had a sticker with the part number on it. Also note that eBay was only a little cheaper after you figure shipping costs so I got mine from the dealership and installed myself after watching a video of it on YouTube. Also, note that some P-Dealer parts departments will offer a discount to PCA members! Good luck!
Thanks, I'm planning to remove the door panel this weekend and take a look. I'm thinking this might be the issue based on the sound.
So a quick follow up to this thread. After trying to remove the door panels on a couple of occasions with no success I figured I might as well take it to my independent shop and have them do it. I bought a new set of OEM speakers and they installed them last week and this solved my problem. The sound system sounds great now so it was obviously a blown door woofer issue.
