Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Occasionally it won't start. Cranking speed is normal, no fuel pressure. I checked at that little valve (Shrader valve?) by depressing it while my buddy turned the key. There is power through the fuel pump fuse. Both times this happened, before the tow truck could arrive, it started and ran fine going home Ideas? Bob

POST 2Original post

CPS crank position sensor Have you ever replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch?

POST 3Original post

You probably have Two problems... 1 .your fuel pump check valve is bad and why it is hard to get fuel pressure... 2 : like Joe said..bad CPS......

POST 4Original post

Quick way to confirm CPS: if tach moves/wiggles during cranking, CPS has life, if tach is dead flat at zero while cranking, CPS is bad. Replacing CPS is not difficult.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So nearly two hundred of you have read my post, and all seem to agree. To the three who responded with the suggestion that the CPS was bad, thank you. Thanks also to the suggestion as to how to check it. So now I have to drive it till it won't start to do further diagnosis. I will let you know. Bob

POST 6Original post

CPS......since you've had issues with it not starting on occasion, I would just change it anyway.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 20067980

Also, CPS tend to intermittently fail when hot, then on cool down work again (temporarily) before going into eventual total failure all the time. If tach needle does not bounce when engine is cranking after a 'hot no start situation' its probably a failing CPS like others have said . To confirm this, or get you home , spray liberally for 5-10 seconds the CPS with brake clean,, with the straw shooting directly on cps to cool it down. Many/most times the car will now start right up...

OP, in case you choose to replace the CPS, heres the one I installed last year in my 04 C4S: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...ch-98660611204 It was a pretty easy install.
