Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have a factory installed BOSE system in my Chevy Avalanche that puts my Porsche system to shame.
Leading evidence: 'Install bose system in my chevy avalanche' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'bose am performance may vary significantly' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install bose system in my chevy avalanche' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I suspect Bose AM performance may vary significantly from vehicle to vehicle.

Suggestion
To stay efficient, the inverters run their transistors in switching mode, and synthesize the 60hz output fundamental using pulse width/density modulation, which produces very high harmonics relative to the 60hz fundamental and the >20khz PWM/PDM sample rate.

Suggestion
A $12K Korean econobox's standard stereo sounds better when using the radio.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I get frequent but random squealing when I listen to AM stations. Anyone else having these problems? Porsche service tried a new radio and put in a booster antenna but it did not make any difference. thanks, patty
Yeah my AM radio is awful - I live in Phoenix so it's not like I am listening to stations from 1000's of miles away. Local station squeel, you can hear the turn signal, AC compressor, virtually everything in the AM radio. It's awful. Even the FM cuts out of surround sound on some stations even though I'm within a few miles of the transmitter. The Bose "premium" stereo is an absolute attrocity. A $12K Korean econobox's standard stereo sounds better when using the radio.
I second this, as a high end sports car the Porsche BOSE stereo sucks big time. I have a factory installed BOSE system in my Chevy Avalanche that puts my Porsche system to shame. Come on PCNA can't you get with the program and give us a great sound system c/w I-pod input jack.
When I turn on the AM radio, I get frequent random squealing too...from my wife, 'cause the only time AM goes on in my CS is for Cal Bears or SF 49ers football games.
I get the random squealing too, and it's on one of the biggest stations in the area. Can't understand why Porsche should have so much trouble with reception.
No squealing here. The reception is even fairly good from a distance. Not as good as other cars I have driven, but not bad. Overall, the sound system is not good when compared to other systems in higher end cars. I have the upgraded Bose system. Playing a CD is decent but not impressive.
AM on my Bose is notably good. Better than my VW's AM ("premium sound" -- whatever...), and better reach and fade suppression, albeit not better fidelity, than a Carver TX-11a I have specifically for AM reception (and radio broadcast R&D). I was pleasantly surprised by how well it works.
I suspect Bose AM performance may vary significantly from vehicle to vehicle. Radio is black magic in the first place, and people don't pay much attention to AM performance anymore.
My AM reception and sound seems to be fine but I do hear squealing/noise when my Garmin is plugged into the DC socket. It gets really bad when I plug in a DC Inverter - especially when it's plugged into the passenger's side socket.
amplitude modulation comes in great as does frequency modulation. i have the bose upgrade, its fine and to me, certainly not as bad as the reputation its gotten on the forums. sure i have had some high end aftermarket systems in previous cars but when playing a cd in my cayman s its good enough not to want to deal with disturbing the flow of the dash/console.
I have the standard radio. I listen to a local AM Talk Radio station all the time. There is some squealing . . . . but that's just Rush. He's always squealing about something.
That's to be expected. Inverters (and UPS's when their inverters are running) generate metric arseloads of interference in the medium wave region (which is where AM broadcast lives). To stay efficient, the inverters run their transistors in switching mode, and synthesize the 60hz output fundamental using pulse width/density modulation, which produces very high harmonics relative to the 60hz fundamental and the >20khz PWM/PDM sample rate. The radio is just accurately reproducing what's actually in the air.
[okay, class dismissed...]
A few weeks ago when shopping for a battery keeper, I made interference a criterion. Partly as a consequence, I wound up getting the Yuasa Smartshot, and it works great (and generates no interference).
Optional External AM Antenna
Porsche offers an external Am radio antenna as a most affordable option.
Does anybody have the external AM antenna?
If so, how much of a difference does it make?
Thanks in Advance,
I get squealing all the time when on AM, BOSE system. My CS is now stored for the winter. Thought I was the only one with this problem, but thanks again to this site, I know now it’s a common problem.
Thanks SF Cfan, I will try it with the Surround OFF, I have it on all the time. Now I just have to wait until Spring to find out.
