When I was Racing almost full time and setting World Records on my engine that was 5x the production HP and a spinning it to 12k RPM, I loved my "Battle Tested Parts" ...Anytime I disassembled the engine to inspect/refresh/rebuild I had more confidence in my used parts that had proven reliability and was glad to re-use any or all of them and just replace the gaskets/seals and rings/bearings even though sometimes I had thoughts to re-use the bearings that were in perfect condition....But after heavy deliberation I would always relent to replacing all the "consumable" bearings, rings, gaskets, seals ect....

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So this thread will be for discussion on "Battle Tested" used M96 parts vs new "Infant Mortality" rates on brand new untested parts .... What are your concerns ?? I see a lot of people PooPoo on used engines or parts or on used cars that have less than 90kmiles on them with fear of the "unknown" , but with no details of these fears.... Any Automotive Part, Aerospace Part, or Medical Equipment has a Bathtub Curve of reliability in three stages....1: Early failure ( Infant Mortality) , 2. Usefull life 3: End of life ( worn out)...with the Usefull Life being the most failure free period where parts are the most dependable .. Any time any "hard core parts" would show any signs of wear or fatigue of course I would replace them with the highest quality and $$ was not a consideration, ....but the new untested parts no matter the quality or cost were never as confident inspiring as the "Battle Tested" parts that were being replaced.....but of course after they had "proven" them selves the confidence would return... During a "rebuild" a lot of hard core parts are re-used like the Crankshaft and Cams anyway......... and others are "upgraded" like Pistons, Rods ( just for the hell of it or for more displacement-hp)......... but just for a factory performing 300hp engine why the fear of a 50K miles engine when it cost less than $10K when a rebuild is $30k-$40K? Hard Core Race engines are always built a little looser clearance wise to help keep friction /temperature low at high RPMs and engines with several thousands of miles will have the clearances opened up a bit as well and are suitable for Track Work... So I have seen some cars and engines get PooPooed on so now is the time to discuss your fears with real facts/data to ease the concerns...These cars have been on the road for 25 years and we now know all the faults most of which can be eliminated or upgraded without splitting the cases or even removing the head bolts...

POST 2Original post

Youre absolutely right about this, especially nowadays because there is a lot of terrible parts on the market right now, even from respected brand names.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't think this $8k engine would last long.......and it didn't !!! https://redirect.viglink.com/?format...851538272.html I would have asked two important questions before buying,..(1); what is the total mileage on on the "Battle Tested Parts" .( 2) ; what was the cause for the dissembly/reassembly? If it was just an IMSB failure on a 50k miles it would have been a steal for someone especially since he was willing to do the install also... And I assume you could keep you old engine ( if there was anything left of it ) Did someone in here buy it ???

POST 4Original post

Skip I wish there was a reasonable engine rebuilder but unfortunately it’s not real a stock engine from Porsche is as low as $6400 aftermarket with at least 75hp more really worth $40000 i wish there was a rebuilder that can redo my motor for under $20k im still hoping my engine holds out

If I was just 30 years younger.......when I see IMSB replacements for $6800 !!! .....and here I am a 69yo retired Porscehetech on SSI with a side hustle of UAOS.UIDS... Labor prices in the US have gone crazy ...Just 6 years ago in the UK you could get a turn-key rebuild from Hartech for under $10K https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...DIY+10K+Engine

POST 8Original post

On my end, what I can tell you is that prices have gone up significantly post-covid on everything and there have been quality issues with most every supplier, requiring us to spend a lot of time doing quality checks that otherwise shouldn't be needed. Part of the issue that has been discussed ad nauseum is that between covid and the forced EV push, that sent suppliers into a tail spin. Many parts, like Beru coils, used to be made in Germany and now they are from China. Same with lots of Mahle filters and Bosch injectors. The list goes on and on. I have personally seen new coil packs and injectors be bad right out of the box. Same goes for coolant expansion tanks - you basically have to use a Genuine one or the caps don't fit and they won't hold pressure. There is a difference between Genuine and OEM, even if it looks like a factory part or it is made by the same manufacturer, not to say that everything from Porsche is perfect. Case in point are the genuine cam sprockets for the aircooled cars that are made by Sebro and have known issues. We've been telling customers for years to only run R&S replacements or use re-use the originals. And some parts are just flawed by design, like the M96 water pump. There is no hardened 52100 steel inner race for the bearing - the ***** run right on the shaft. That's the root cause of why they fail. Same goes for the master link chains made for the M96 years ago - the master link clip wasn't made right and the clips would eject. All the chains ended up getting recalled after several engines popped. I speak to other industry professionals outside the Porsche world and this isn't something isolated to just our cars.

POST 9Original post

I've been surprised to see a couple of sad owners report their engines have bitten the dust. In both cases a dealer reported the IMS bearing had failed at 7,000 miles/ 3 years ago. In electronics, infant mortality is a science based fact. Would we have considered 7,000 miles infant mortality or more likely a failure by the installer? (Neither engine had a LN bearing).

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 20071412

FWIW there's a rebuilder in France that does full M96 rebuilds for 9 900 to 13 400 (about $11-15k, 20% sales tax included), with a full 3-year warranty if you have them install your new engine, which is about another $2-3k. They use either LN bearings or the updated "big IMS". Steel liners, though. But the warranty should be enough to reassure anyone for a least some time. They say they do about 200 engines a year, and are a supplier of rebuilds to many Porsche service centers that simply don't want to touch M9xs anymore. Not advertising them in any way, I'm neither affiliated nor a customer. But it looks like it's doable for a reasonable cost.
