Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It works for me, because I use the excellent voice prompts and can see it when I need to glance over.

I use industrial strength velcro to attach it to the center of the passenger sun visor.

We use the "bean bag" in our A4 and it works great.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a portable GPS and I am trying to figure out a way to use it w/o using a windshield suction mount (which is illegal in California), anyone have a good idea how to do this?
I use the Pro Clip mount that fits on the center AC vent for my Garmin 660. There is a photo in the gallery I think. The mount that fits on the consol interfers with the manual shifter but would work for a Tip.

There are some more mounts that people have mentioned in various treads here as well if you want to look for them.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 650. I use the suction cup mount, turned vertical and sideways, and push it between the passenger seat and the center console. This is easy to remove, say at the gas station, and although not in your direct view during driving, a quick glance down lets you know where to go next. Very easy, very practical. If you don't understand what I am describing, let me know and I will post a picture.
I have a Garmin Nuvi and the "bean bag" mount. The GPS sits in the center of the dash. It stays put! The first weekend I used it I made a "spirited" run up Deal's Gap. The GPS did not move! When I park I lift the GPS off the dash and put it in the passenger footwell.

We use the "bean bag" in our A4 and it works great. I've "tested" it against lateral G forces in the CS and the bean bag sticks pretty well.
On the other hand, I am not sure the CHP and locals are really looking for suction mounted devices. My wife worries, so we got the bean bad.
I suppose the suction mount does give 'em probable cause though so . . .
I have a Magellan unit. I use industrial strength velcro to attach it to the center of the passenger sun visor. In fact, I may move it to the left hand side at some point. It works for me, because I use the excellent voice prompts and can see it when I need to glance over. (Yes...I still have to program my Homelink...LOL)
I personally don't like it on the dash or somehow rigged to the dash. It receives signals perfectly where it is, and when it needs a recharge the cord can reach it.
I live in California where the windshield mounts aren't allowed, so I'm planning on using the product below when my Nuvi 760 arrives. I have used the Garmin bean bag before in another car and it would not stay in place- it might have been my driving.

I mount the suction to the bottom of a midsize plastic cup (the Nuvi 670 hangs over the rim), and I put the cup in the driver side cup holder. In a great visible location, great antenae reception, and easy to put away in the glove box after.
This is what I was considering doing, using the included plastic mount plate in the cup holder (with some modification), but doesn't it swing around a bit? Maybe my cup holder is broken, but my water bottles move around a lot.
Vmichael,
It doesn't swing around. I adjust the cup holder ring, and I applied a no-stick neoprene strip where the cup and holder contact. Never had a problem with it.
I've tried just placing the mount bracket attached to the mounting disc into the cup holder. Yes, it does swing around if that's what you're doing. You really need to mount the GPS suction to the bottom of a cup (or onto the disc and place into a cup).
Don't bother. I use the factory friction mount for my Garmen C320. It works fine on my Honda Odyssy without any problem. However, when I accelerate hard on my Cayman (hey, it's a sports car), the force of acceleration will tip the GPS unit over. It will fall off the dashboard.
