chaps, i'm pondering replacing my 4 speakers with something a tidy bit less tinny sounding, my car has no amp nothing just 4 speakers (2 in the dash under the window, 2 in the back), what kind of speakers / size etc does one need?
Leading evidence: 'revelation' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

just recently put some Hertz DCX 100.3 ones in mine with the adapter rings that the chap on here has been selling, fit with the adapters is really good, just have to make a slight adjustment/notch in the adapters for the rears, very minor and just with a sander/dremel.
Sound quality is much improved
think i got them on Amazon for about £100 for the 4, also had to buy 4 little connector cables (not sure what they are called, but from ebay £5) these little cables allow you to connect the OEM plugs from your car's loom into the new speakers, therefore not having to cut into your original loom which has got to be a good thing! (this i think is the same with any aftermarket speakers)
Im not massively into my car audio, there are many speaker options out there, the Alpine ones are often favoured, but to my ear these hertz seem like more than good enough.
JMG Porsche sells a kit with Alpine speakers and the adapter rings (also the cable adapters) - plug and play. 30 min install to do all 4. Source your own speakers and you can save a few £ (you can just buy the mounting kit).
My 996 has gone through several iterations of audio upgrades:
1) replaced the stock speakers with Alpine spg 10c2. Approx £40 a pair from Amazon.
2) replaced the becker traffic pro with a double din carplay unit.
3) added dynamat type stuff in the panels behind the rear speakers
4) added a focal ibus 20 subwoofer with a custom vertical mount in the passenger footwell
5) I've recently replaced the rear set of alpines & the focal sub, with some Jehnert items. These were apparently also available as a special order option from Porsche when new.
I have the matching mid components for the front doors, but have yet to fit them as they'll need an amp. For details see
https://www.jehnert.de/en/produkt-kategorie/doorboards-soundsystems/porsche-en/911-996-models/
observations:
At this point, the car is never going to win any kind of audio contests or do that hair trick (search youtube if you don't know what I mean), but it's at least as good if not better than most premium audio systems in modern cars.
With the exception of those who might have an exceptionally loud/droning exhaust, I think most people would be happy with a combination of 1,2, & 3. These are all fairly easy to DIY, & needn't cost an arm & a leg.
The best bang for buck is undoubtedly replacing the stock speakers with Alpines(or similar) & adding some dynamat. You'll find "how to" examples for this on Youtube. Among others, Martin (MisterCorn) did one on his channel.
Replacing the becker unit, was another big step forward. The sound stage & extra "welly" from the amp built into the Pioneer headunit proved to be a revelation.
For the committed, who are happy to have a sub in the rear footwell or lose some space in the front passenger footwell, an "underseat" subwoofer will take things up another level again.
I only opted for (5) as I stumbled across a 2nd hand set on ebay at a price that was too good to pass up & I'd heard the same system in another car. It's better than the BOSE option, but at the RRP it's arguably overpriced. Having said that I found Jehnert after sales & support to be extremely helpful, & they'll still supply spare parts.
I'd suggest you search for Neil's (Dammit) thread on this forum too. I was impressed when I heard it, at the 2019 Precision Porsche cars & coffee meet up. From his thread he seems to be very happy with the additional upgrades over the last year, so I look forward to seeing it again sometime post covid.
Lastly, if you're interested in a boxed pair of the Alpine speakers, then drop me a PM. JMG supply custom adaptors to fit these speakers, but they're expensive for what they are. If you search on youtube (or this forum) you'll find other examples of how to make your own adaptors. There was a chap on this forum (super pauly?) who was 3D printing adapter brackets too, & from what I recall his prices seemed much more reasonable.

Was there any sound deadening material at all on the rear inner wings?
I often think these cars would benefit from a little strategic dynamatting here and there.
Great write-up sp1ke, thanks for sharing. I talked to Sylvester at Enigma earlier this week about audio upgrade options along similar lines. I also don't have the door speakers, so makes things bit more limited. As always, trade off with cost vs benefit with much of this stuff.
I've been through a few iterations, where I am now is:
Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB head unit.
Morel MPS 4.400 4 channel class AB amp.
Morel Virtus separate mid and tweeters (silk cones, which struck me as quite fun) in the dash, and Hertz something or other woofers in the doors.
I've got some other Hertz (100.3?) in the back, but they're not plugged in at the moment and tbh I'm not missing them.
Focal powered iBus 20 amp bolted up under the dash on the passenger side with a piece of blue leather that matches the interior bonded to the visible edge so it looks like its meant to be there.
The sound quality is very impressive, although I think it was better with the Becker head unit, but that limited me to CD's and Radio 4 - the Blaupunkt allows streaming from my phone. The Becker was also much better at handsfree, but the ITB's and so forth coming soon probably make phonecalls a thing of the past.
I might change head units yet again, jury is out on that (and what I'd change too!)
The car is at Precision at the moment for it's annual service, MOT, and having one of our new dual-stage oil scavenge pumps fitted, but people are welcome to have a listen to it when I get it back.
I bought the alpines and made my own mounts cutting up the old speakers. Pretty simple and saved a bit
They sandwich together and i bent over (with a soldering iron) and soldered the original plugs on
Have a Blaupunkt London DAB/Bluetooth head unit. Has a blue screen but apart from that suits the car well and is easy to use. Also has the pre-amp outputs as I am still using the factory amp as have 6 speakers
Hello gents. I'm the guy who designed up the brackets to fit aftermarket speakers. Mainly because the price of the JMG was eye watering, so I set to designing up my own solution from scratch as I also didn't want to butcher up and glue in.
With my adapters you can fit pretty much any sub-43mm speaker, not limited to the Alpines like the JMG kit seems to suggest. Plus that kit seems to be basically a clamp rather than a mechanical fixing.
It's a straight fit at the front, the rears need a minor modification that I can't design in as I have a 986 myself so I can't prototype it. It's a simple mod though.
I charge £25 for a pair, a quid UK delivery or a tenner tracked overseas. It makes life a lot easier, if that's the way you want to go.

Cheers gents.
Picking up on Teffers and Sp1kes posts..
Mine has felt insulation material in the cavity behind the leather card it sits between the speaker and the wing, (though there is a small hole in it directly behind the speaker)
Where are people putting the dynomat? Directly behind the speaker and before the felt insulation or behind the felt insulation and the metal of the rear wing?
Thanks
