Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Afternoon Gents, My beloved 996 will not turn over, everything works, dash lights, radio etc. Volt meter reads14 volts, but it will not turn over no clicking nothing.Battery was new two weeks ago ,car was running fine two days ago. Any ideas ? TIA PJE

POST 2Original post

Couple of things it can be .. ignition lock can cause issues .. starting is not normally one of them but possible .. Starter Motor is another and more likely .. No click and i'll lean towards the starter relay .. pos 7 relay board 2 which is under the carpet behind the rear seats .. a few 10 mm nuts to get the ally panels up . Swop with another relay there to see if it starts .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

996 cabriolet not turning over. Many thanks for your reply,I removed the carpet from behind the seats, but I could not see any relays only the compartment where the soft top lives. I also noticed today that when the ignition key is turned to the on position it does not spring back .? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks .

POST 4Original post

I'm afraid this kinda moved to PM .. the OP pointed out it was a Cab which i stupidly didn't notice .. after all it's only in the title of the topic .. sigh . Dam i hate getting old .. need stronger glasses is my excuse !! Relay board is under the carpet and under the cab roof on these .. Roof in service position , remove the carpet and you have access to the relay board . The OP replaced the ignition lock .. it was faulty anyways but this didn't fix the starting issue .. PM tonight .. he replaced the starter relay and all is well . This is to update this thread for future reference . My reply which was via pm .. Aghh sorry .. i didn't read it was a Cab .. you open the roof so the rear lid is open and the roof just starts to move back .. on each side there is a cable holding the roof down , you unclip these and you can fold the roof glass section back. It's what we call the service position .. the carpet under that needs removing , a couple of push trim clips at the front and it just pulls out . The relay support will be the same and its n/s/r under the carpet. To test the wiring to the relay then you need a voltmeter .. term 85/86 will have a 12 volt and an earth when ignition turned to start position .. you remove the relay to test this .. Term 30 will have a 12 volt supply and term 87 is the output to the relay . First off just swop it with one of the other relays , if no joy then i would test as above to see whats missing .. ign 12 v , earth etc ... terminal numbers are listed on the relay . If you have all of the above then its the starter motor . You ignition lock certainly needs changing as that's not right but i'm not convinced that is your actual starting issue .. rare that locks fail on the start side .
