Echoing the concern already expressed, I live off of a long dusty gravel road and fear that the oil based filter will rob horsepower if not kept clean (oil and dust = mud= restricted airflow).

Clean process of the filter is actually pretty time consuming

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi my name is Nate and I am a performance representative for Evolution Motorsports. I have read through some of the threads in regards to our V-Flow air induction system for the 987
Boxster
/
Cayman S
and I wanted to start a thread that would allow you all to ask questions regarding this intake system.
Just as an FYI, there have been two generations of our
Cayman S
/ 987
Boxster
V-Flow. The first generation came with a 4 layer cotton gauze K&N filter, the latest generation comes with a custom make 5 layer cotton guaze filter that wasspecificallydesignedto fit our billet venturi adapter. The second generation filter is a much better fit than the first generation filter. Because of that, we are offering a discounted rate to those who want to upgrade from the generation one filter to the generation two filter. A generation two replacement filter willrun $75, we are offering them for $40 as a replacement for the generation one filter.
Secondly, for those of you who are members of this forum we are discounting the
Cayman S
/ 987
Boxster
V-Flow 10%. That brings the total to: $314.10, the regular retail price is $349.If you want to take advantage of this, please email your order to
[email removed]
and I will make sure that you get the discounted price.
For all other questions, please just post them to this thread andI will answer them as soon as I can. Thanks!!
The concern of the filter efficiency has been aired in this forum. The concern is that particulate will get into the engine and slowly crud it up and damage it. How does the filters capture efficiency compare to the OEM paper filter? Is there an ASTM or any other standard test for air filters? What is the recommended cleaning schedule for the filter in normal and severe duty?

My question is when will you come out with a forced induction kit that will remain cool in the confines of the middle of the car? /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/drivingskid.gif
The filter that we are using for the 987 Boxster / Cayman Sapplication has the same characteristics and design as our other V-Flow systems (996TT / 996 Carrera / 997 Carrera). We have over 1000 of these intakes on the road and we have never ran into any problem with particulates or dirt entering the motor through the filter. We do recommend checking the condition of the filter every 12-15,000 miles to make sure that there are no defects or damage to the filter. You can clean those filters with any filter recharge kit.
We are waiting on what VF-Engineering is going to bring to the table in terms of a supercharger system for the Cayman. We work with them for our 996 / 997 Carrera supercharger systems and they are currently working on the Cayman S supercharger project. I will keep you all updated on the progess being made with that.
Hello Nate,
I have your EVO V-Flow and absolutely love it. However, how does one know if they have a first or second generation filter?
Here is my install in my car. Can you tell visually?
Thanks.
2nd Generation because it has the adapter right Nate?
Nate, I talked to the owner of the car with the VF Engineering supercharger on it today and that car still isn't back together yet (will be shortly), and VF has sworn off doing another supercharger due to space limitation issues, at least not use the vortec sc, maybe some other type? This will be on the Sony show car at Sema so check it out if you are there.
That looks like a second generation filter. If there is an Evolution Motorsports logo on the black rubber section of the filter than it isa second generation.
You will want to check the filter every 15-20,000 miles. You can clean it using a basic K&N recharge kit that you can find at any automotive parts store. If you need further assistance please let me know....
Echoing the concern already expressed, I live off of a long dusty gravel road and fear that the oil based filter will rob horsepower if not kept clean (oil and dust = mud= restricted airflow). Should there be a more agressive cleaning schedule for extreme conditions? Or should this be avoided in these conditions?
You are not wrong in your thoughts. If you drive your car in an environment that is outside the norm then you will want to check the filter more frequently. If you are going to clean the filter when it gets dirty, we recommend having an extra filter on hand so that you can run a clean filter while the dirty filter dries after the cleaning process. The cleaning process of the filter is actually pretty time consuming because you have to make sure that the filter is completely dry before re-installing it. That usually means letting is sit overnight to completely dry out before re-oiling.
Great point, you want to be sparing with the oil when re-oiling. Keep in mind a basic K&N filter has 15-19 grams of oil on the fitler. We only use 7-9 grams on our filters. K&N uses quite a bit more partly because their filters usually have a longer shelf life than our filters do. If you over oil or saturate a particular section of the filter than you are running the risk of having that excess oil pulled through the filter and onto the MAF which will cause it to malfunction.
Dyno gain at the rear wheels depends on whatever other mods you have but I would say on average it is in the 5-10 HP range, I think I got either 6 or 7.
AS AN ADDED BONUS ATTENDEES AT CROCTOBERFEST WILL GET A DISCOUNT ON BOTH THE EVO INTAKES AND GIAC ECU TUNING AND THE INSTALLATION!!! Have you signed up for Croctoberfest yet???
Can someone who has installed the EVO air intake comment on the difference in sound from both inside and outside the car?
Can we also get some people to comment on their experiences after installing the air intake? Was the power gain very noticeable? I assume most people install the air intake in combination with some other mods like a chip flash and an exhaust. Any way to comment on the difference that was made by the air intake alone?
I installed the air intake a few weeks before exhaust and ECu tuning so I can comment that I could hear the intake more than over stock, but not say 50% more, it was probably 10-20% more sound and mostly in the higher rpm ranges. As far as performance, it is hard to feel a small HP gain, but what I noticed was a bit more responsiveness to the throttle.
If you want one of these as a discount I would encourage you to come to Croctoberfest! I've even heard that some folks are getting FREE dyno runs!
K-Man S, I realalise these questions must get agravating....But we hear so many opinions about the pro's and con's of the filters we don't know what to do! I was part of the run upto Ventura this past week and in talking to folks at the show there where many comments that an 'Oiled Filter' unless VERY WELL maintained (Like cleaned every 6 months / 2000 miles) will actually decrease HP and not give you gains.
Oil + Dust = No air flow. I have D-snorked and am wanting to do a filter but if it is 'WORK' to provide 6-7 HP gains... Can you give us your Thoughts on this?
Thanks....
I have had mine on for over 1500 miles. There is no visible clogging. There is actually no visible build up what-so-ever. This is a very lightweight oil that is applied. Not vegatable oil or motor oil. (I think people are picturing an old engine that has the caked up crud where oil has spilled and road grime has accumulated.) Replaceable paper filters are great because they are, well, replaceable. You would have to change your tires less often if you switched to 17" wheels and had Sears install a set of 40k mi tires too. My point is that there is no free lunch. Performance parts will require more maintenance or frequent replacement. At least you still have a stainless steel exhaust and 20,000 mi service interval. If you are not up for tinkering, choose paper. In the end, two things I have noticed from this mod: One, the increased intake noise that KMan points out in his post. Not overbearing, but you hear more of the engine, esp. w/ windows down. Also a raucus sucking noise when you get on it. Two, gas mileage. I have tracked my mileage via a spread sheet from day one (yes, yes, Dr Freud, I know), and I have consistently avgeraged 2-3MPG more with the filter installed. I do not think the manufacturer makes this claim, and your results may vary, just what I see on the sheet.

I have probably 3000+ miles on the V-flow by now and have the same comments as K-ManS and Fadiboy.
As a general rule, more maintenance (ie cleaning) is required over the stock air filter to maintain its filtering efficiency and performance potential. As said before you don't get anything for free. If you can't imagine yourself getting into your own airbox once in a while between major services and taking the time to properly clean and oil your filter, then the stock paper one is best for you. For me, the extra maintnenance is easily worth the amount of enjoyment this car is giving me.
