Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I depressed the shock shaft with a rod after supporting and lowering the hub, then removed the spring, gaiter and replaced the bump stop.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I have noticed that my front bump stops have seen better days. I cant find a guide a bump stump replacement guide for the 996 that doesnt involve removing the whole strut. I have found this for the 986 boxter and presume it's the same? http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/74683-bump-stop-replacement.html Really keen not to have to have the geo re-done for the sake of some £20 bumpstops. Any words of wisdom greatly received!

POST 2Original post

I did mine yesterday morning. I have M030 suspension, and it was fairly tight so might not be possible on standard length springs. I removed the tuning fork from the coffin arm, and the drop link from the ARB. Jack under the ballpoint and undo the strut top but. Lower the jack to release the top of the strut. If you aren't don't want to remove the top mount, then you'll need to compress the shock (jack back up against the edge of the top mount perhaps) to give you space to get the spring and bump stop/gaitor off. Lift the spring as far as possible then lean over sideways so the top 2ish coils clear the top of the shock, then unscrew the spring, being careful not to scratch the ram of the shock with the spring. These were mine!

POST 3Original post

My right one needs doing as well.....how hard was it to undo the various bolts? Looking at the cars history file the bump stops and top mounts were last done 45K ago so it's been a while.

POST 4Original post

You will need to have your geometry reset afterwards.

POST 5Original post

I'm not sure about that. Mine is being done because of top mounts, track rods and rear toe arms. If you don't touch the eccentric bolts, top mounts or track rods then what has changed?

POST 6Original post

The geo won't change if you don't remove the top mount. If you do, just mark the positions of the bolts before removal.

POST 7Original post

That's true, leave the top mounts undisturbed and you'll be ok.

POST 8Original post

I did these a couple of months ago (996TT), without removing the struts and without disturbing the top mounts. It was relatively straight forward if the general process described above is followed with the drop link. I depressed the shock shaft with a rod after supporting and lowering the hub, then removed the spring, gaiter and replaced the bump stop.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone, I have ordered the bumpstops so looks like I will busy this weekend!

POST 10Original post

Any chance you can take some photos and post them here as I need to do this on my one as well and some photos would really help.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well it was all going amazingly well for about 90 seconds.... until I snapped my torx bit. Tried a second one but the nut is stuck fast on the damper shaft. not sure what to do at the moment. Just know it's going to end up escalating into buying a set of ohlins....

POST 12Original post

Either way, that has to come out Mark. If you have a reverse drill bit, you could try that in the centre of the broken piece to loosen it. Use some good penetrant on the shock threaded shaft for 24 hrs and try again. How were you trying to get that nut off? That is an awful lot of torque on that broken bit. Try a power ratchet for a few seconds ?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got the broken bit easily enough thankfully! I was just using a half inch socket by hand, don't know my own strength It does however look like the bit has/had an air bubble in it so maybe that was a weakness. I have spoken to 911 Excellence and they have said its not worth replacing the bumpstops until I need further suspension work doing so will leave them for the time being. However I need to take the car to them fairly soon for a service so they an assess further then.
