I have the Tequipment 996 SSK (which is the same part than the 997 SSK) recently installed on my C4S and I can not be happier...

Good deal, with all the plastic bits used, its easy to see how worn out the stock shifter can get after almost 20 years of use...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Occasionally when cold, sometimes first gear doesn't engage all the way and will pop out - I assume this is just a cable adjustment, but I haven't fixed it yet (I just got the car back so I just haven't gotten around to it).
I'm looking to upgrade and reduce the shift throw on my '01 996 C4. The car currently only has 13,700 miles so I'm not experiencing and slop or play in the shifter, it's working perfectly.
I'm going to do this upgrade in conjunction with a Function First shift **** so I have to take that into consideration. Also, I will not be tracking this car, just spirited street driving down in Mexico. I've read all I could... however, I can't find any threads that are relatively recent on this subject. (Or my search foo is all wrong.) I have driven a 997 Turbo with standard shifter as well as a 997 GT3 with the SSK but it's been too long to remember what it was like and I don't have that opportunity again at the moment. I do want to stay with factory Porsche parts instead of aftermarket kits like B&M etc.
For those of you out there that have experience with both, which would you chose and why?
997 GT3 Shift Console
I have this with a weighted Function First **** and it's perfect.....lucky you it's currently on sale !!

For Porsche short shift kits, There is Numeric and everything is a far off second place. I was not about to rebuild the plastic shifter for 300 bucks I would rather just get the right part and be done with it. These cars are worth it.
I have the 997 standard shifter in my car. I've driven a 997 with the SSK and I didn't like it. It was too short, and felt like it would be easy to miss a gear or get the wrong one since they're all so close together and there isn't much feel of where the gears are. I only drove that car for about 20 minutes, so it's hard for me to say whether I'd get used to it and eventually like it over time. But if first impressions are correct, then the 997 SSK is not for me. This is totally a personal preference though!
Ive used both. The 997 shifter was an improvement over the stock 996 box, wasnt enough for me. The 997 techquipment shifter was what I was looking for. Much shorter throws albeit a bit notchy and 1at is a bit stiff until gearbox oil is up to temp. Just depends on what your looking for.
I was originally thinking of this but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra $170 for just metal bushings, with the same throw as the standard 997 shift console.
- Porsche factory shifter short throw (shortest 35% shorter than 996, also $500!)
- B&M shifter (shortest, 35% shorter than 996, $285 +/-)
- 997/GT3 (shorter than 996 by 15%, plus billet aluminum bushings vs. the base model plastic, $300)
- 997 base model (shorter than 996 by 15%, $200 +/-)
- 996 base model (what you have)
maybe you want the rifle bolt precision of a Numeric or B & M

try and find someone at a C & C or a PCA event that has some incarnation of an upgrade
I know that the last 4 years with a 997 / GT3 and a weighted **** has been perfect, the shifts are effortless
I generally use just 2 fingers
I've pretty much used them all (996 - stock, 997 stock, 997ssk, B&M ssk, & Numeric [both with stock cables and their cables]). The Numeric with their cables are far and away the best - worth every penny of price difference. My only regret is that I wasted so much time on all the others.
How hard was it to align the numeric so that it shifts correctly? I read on another thread that it's iffy because it doesn't come with an alignment tool like the porsche ones do (green tool).
I have the 997.2 GT3 shifter and it was the upgrade I was looking for. No more slop and the throws are a little shorter.
I basically didn't do anything to "align" mine - shifts perfectly. Occasionally when cold, sometimes first gear doesn't engage all the way and will pop out - I assume this is just a cable adjustment, but I haven't fixed it yet (I just got the car back so I just haven't gotten around to it). It happens so infrequently, that I don't really consider it an "issue" per se' - it's always in the back of my mind though, so I'll fix it soon...
Just to clarify -- I believe the 997.1 GT3 shifter still has plastic bushings. The 997.2 GT3 shifter has metal bushings, as does the 997.2 GT3 Short shifter.
Some have reported problems with shifting using the GT3 short shifter. When I had my C2 I put in a 997.2 GT3 and was very happy with it.
Hey dporto,
I'd love to hear your thoughts specifically comparing the oem 997ssk to the Numeric.
I don't doubt it's better as everyone loves the Numeric, but the 997ssk has short snicky throws -- i've never come close to missing a shift and the rifle bolt action is far better than the 996 or 997 shifter thanks to the aluminum bits. I'm all for upgrades that make financial sense, but can you lead this horse to water?
I have the numeric - it's brilliant, IMO if you've got it in the budget - get one. I have never really considered the cables though... Some say they are loud?
I have the numeric too. Got it from numeric at a real good price as a refurbish with full life time warentee. I also got the cables with the silicon cover. I dont think there is any added cabin noise but u have to make sure they are not against the body or drivetrain. I was able to set up the shifter by eye and then one adjustment later i had them perfect. The shifting experience is great and adds to the fun of the car. I have it on the middle hole and i think its a longer through then the agency power ss i had in the car before. I may try the shortest setting this summer.
I found all the iterations I tried to be an incremental improvement over the last one I tried. I just wasn't quite ecstatic with any of them - until I got the Numeric. Even with the stock cables it was vastly better than the others. The Numeric cables improve it some more, albeit not as vast a change as the shifter alone. The cables do add some transmitted noise. It's not a lot - I actually kind of like it, although I'm sure it could be disconcerting to some. I installed the cables myself. The most difficult part is getting the rubber surround/stopper back into the tunnel with the new cables in it. I didn't use enough lubricant the first time and struggled for about half an hour trying to get it seated (you've got to insert it from underneath the car). I decided to wait until the next day (when I grabbed some car wash soap from home as I didn't have anything appropriate in the shop - didn't want to use grease as I thought it might eat the rubber) and it popped right in. Hope this helps anyone that's on the fence...
Yea it was easy i just lifted the rear with the jack. Didnt bother putting it on the lift. U have to wrestle it through the floor a little but access is good when u pull the center consol. If u get the silicon wrap u only need one length. Its long enough for both cables.
Thanks for all the feedback and insight! I've read pretty much everything I could on the standard 997, 997 SSK and 997.2 GT3 shift consoles. After much consideration, I've actually decided on and ordered the 997.2 GT3 shift console from SunCoast. It should arrive on Tuesday, installing Friday 6/29. I'm probably going to pull the console and everything out tomorrow so I can just bolt the new one in, button it up and go for a drive. I will report back with my experience once completed.
I was able to install the 997.2 GT3 Shift Console this morning before work. Super easy to install, I prepped by pulling the center console out on Sunday so I could pull the old shift console and re-install everything this morning. Probably took me an hour and fifteen minutes to do start to finish. The info contained in this forum helped immensely!
Very happy with the shorter throws and glad I didn't go with the SSK.. Overall it has a much crisper and just cleaner shift action. No play whatsoever, every gear engages perfectly. I also installed the Function First shift **** and it feels so much better in the hand than the stock unit. I also think the added weight helps keep things smooth, it really just glides into gear effortlessly.
Next up is a set of RSS engine mounts before I get this thing lowered to a proper ride height.

^^ Sounds like you're on the slippery slope! Enjoy the ride
Oh it's slipery alright!
End of summer I'll order Bilstein B8's and H&R springs. That gives me from now until then to figure out which sway bars to use if any.
Good deal, with all the plastic bits used, its easy to see how worn out the stock shifter can get after almost 20 years of use... money well spent!
Speaking of which, you'll love the RSS mounts. They do add a bit of NVH. At first, i wasn't sure if l liked it, but I've come to really enjoy the "live" feel it adds to the cabin. Regardless, it's worth the MUCH improved feel of the rear end during load transitions (entering a turn), the RSS mounts are a BIG improvement over stock worn out mounts.
OK, so it is obvious I am late to the party. And that is because I just acquired a 3P to keep my X50 TipS company.
Been reading this forum and as always many opinions which is always great.
For me, since I will not be tracking the car, looking for something that would feel and perform like a it belongs from the factory.
I read Schnell which I can source locally from Vertex, 997SSK, 997GT3, Numeric, etc.,
For someone like me that would just enjoy shifting around town, what would be the veridict?
PS: I read that Schnell is awesome.
Im guessing youre in Miami? I wont be back in Miami until October but I have a Manthey, its a tick shorter than the 997. Youre welcome to check it out when I get back.
