Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've opted to replace all the rails as they are 22 years old and plastic, but from a visibility check, the only one that demonstrates wear is the chain adjuster pad (996.105.195.00).
Leading evidence: 'Check the only one' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check the only one' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have access to tools and an engineering machine shop and the plan is to replace all 6 cylinders with wet liners.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi
Have finally found workshop time for the car. It had been losing coolant, blowing white smoke from the near side and intermittent missing on cylinder 6.
The engine is out and stripped and sure enough, a cracked cylinder 6.
I have access to tools and an engineering machine shop and the plan is to replace all 6 cylinders with wet liners.
A question for discussion and opinions. What else would you replace on a 150k engine?
Personally, I would do:
Bearings,
Guides,
Chains
Valve stem oil seals
Oil pump
Upgrade IMS to the latest large bearing version
Check all parts for tolerance whilst in there.
Crankshaft
Conrods
Valve stems
I'm sure other much more experienced people will chime in with better ideas.

I'll just add .. engine out then look upwards at the hole it came from ..
The x2 large over engine coolant pipes ..
The small over engine coolant pipe to the bottle .. this is a must as it rots out in the metal clip n/s/r .
O/s/r brake pipe .
Waxoil the bodywork above the engine .
Engine mounts .. you can see they have dropped at this point although they can be done at any time .
A/C pipes .. if leaking at the joints then now is the time to replace front and rear pipes .
Thanks for the replies chaps
The engine is remarkably good (apart from one cracked cylinder!).
No sign of scoring and no obvious ovalling in the cylinders. The IMS bearing (dual) is remarkably good. I took the outer seal off when the clutch was last changed.
Iain. Thanks. I sorted a few things when the gearbox was out but I'll give it all a check.
Berni. I haven't performed a detailed inspection of the bearings yet. Will post when done.
Tomorrow / Monday I'm visiting a couple of local engineering shops for opinions and quotes. I'm hoping that my enthusiasm won't be dampened too much 🤞

Regarding the oil pump. I'm aware of topics suggesting replacement of the hex drive but is there anything else of known weakness?
My pump shows little wear or play.

Just an update on the timing chain rails and guides.
I've opted to replace all the rails as they are 22 years old and plastic, but from a visibility check, the only one that demonstrates wear is the chain adjuster pad (996.105.195.00).
Will attempt a pic of it later but I'm a bit of a Luddite with my phone and this site. Far easier for me on the PC
Must correct myself from earlier.
I assumed the grooves on the chain rails were moulded. They are not. Have just received the new rails and they are smooth flat. All the rails are therefore considerably scored, with the pad being pitted also.
The main bearings and big end bearings are worn. Nothing shocking but sensible to change at this stage. Pic of one half of the main bearings attached. Wear at centre of each..
The thrust washers had also seen better days.
I replaced mine with a billet hex drive, I had heard the originals can break and was the reason I changed it but in reality I haven't heard of one going for many years.
Thanks James
I'm extremely fortunate to have time on my hands and a great friend with a well equipped workshop where I can beaver away and get sage advice.
I have to make the tea as and when required of course
