Also the spark plugs were replaced right before it sat for 4 years.

So I followed some of what Ive heard here, and I used the stethoscope on the spark plugs.

Theres no check engine light so I didnt think I needed to check the codes.

Ive been slowly fixing up my brothers (hopefully mine after all this work) 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (cleaned interior and exterior, fixed convertible hydraulics) but the one problem is theres a squeak that speeds up with revs coming from the engine.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello fine Porsche people,
Ive been slowly fixing up my brothers (hopefully mine after all this work) 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (cleaned interior and exterior, fixed convertible hydraulics) but the one problem is theres a squeak that speeds up with revs coming from the engine. Its been sitting for about 4 years with a dead battery but after some work it starts and drives no problem expect for the squeak. Now for some of my own diagnosing. I saw a video that said that if u spray some water on the ridge side of the belt and the sound stays then its a pulley problem. I removed the belt and turned on the car for a couple seconds to see if the sound stays and it did. This leads me to believe that its coming from the crankshaft pulley. I tried putting a funnel to my ear to affirm where the sound is coming from and feel like its coming from the right side either the AC compressor or crankshaft. When I brought this up with a friend they said that if its the crankshaft area then it could be oil or the shaft itself and other things I kinda got lost with. Oh and something that I forgot to mention is that it squeaks when idle as well. That should be everything and hopefully we can figure this out. Thanks 🙏

Car Sound
Sounds like a squeeky pully to me. Remove the drive belt and start the car to see if the sound still there. If gone then its the belt or a pully. U can just replace the 3 pulleys and belt for a few hundred dollars. I perfer the metal pullys.
If not an idler pully it could be the alt or water pump too. Since the car is not run often it could be any or all of these items
yeah I did take off the belt and started it for a few and the sound was still there. Which pulleys should I replace first and which 3 r u referencing? It kinda sounds like it coming from the right side but idk for sure
Well if the noise is there after the belt is off then its not the pulleys
It may sound weird but make sure the spark plugs r tighten to spec. A loose plug can create a weird sound.
If that all checks out there may be an internal issue with the motor???
Could be loose plug, a noisy injector, carbon buildup, or an exhaust leak (header gasket leak, loose panel in the catalytic converter, muffler).
Possibly a lifter issue?
Have you checked for any codes?
Have you replaced the oil and filter and then run the engine in a spirited fashion after its been properly warmed up? Theres also old fuel in there that could be bad and causing predetination.
i plan on doing an oil change tomorrow as well as loosening and retorquing to spark plugs. Theres no check engine light so I didnt think I needed to check the codes. Also while I have u here, what torque do I need for spark plugs if you know off the top of your head?
im gonna check the exhaust for leaks but how do I check for a lifter issue? Also, for the gas, should I just fill the tank up or should I empty the old gas first? Im not a mechanic just someone who has an interest in cars so is this the point where I should bring it to a professional? Thanks for all the support!
I believe the plugs are 22 ft-lbs. I would drive the car until all the gas has been emptied out and then fill with new. You could also dump a can of BG-44K or Techron Fuel Treatment or SeaFoam fuel treatment in with the current (old) gas and drive until youve emptied the fuel that way. If the engine feels smooth and there are no codes, even with this old gas, you could do a few WOT runs from 0-60 in first and second gear up to near redline to help potentially clear out any carbon buildup if thats the cause of that pinging noise.
Of course, if you feel that youd rather have a mechanic look at it instead, thats fine too, but look for one with 996 experience. Not just a 911, as the 996 is different from other cars, such as the older air-cooled cars.
Torque value for the spark plugs depends on if they are new or are you refitting them.
22 ft-lbs if new and 19 ft-lbs if reusing them.
Below values are Nm(ft-lbs)
If you have a manual trans, check the Alternator pulley, its got an overrun clutch in it, they can squeek and they are available separately and can be changed without pulling the alternator..
Yes its manual but the thing with that is that I took off the belt and started it and the sound didnt go away. Could it still be the problem even if the alternator wasnt moving? Also I checked under the car bc the sound sounded like it was coming from the right and I saw that the cat is rusted pretty badly and theres like a rusted out open line thats opening. Could that be the problem? An exhaust leak?
Sitting in the car, with engine running, do you feel any shaking, in the shifter, or the rear view mirror? Car running, but in neutral
or open the hood and watch the engine, is it moving in time to the squeak?
also, are the muffler tips drooping, hanging low in the bumper cutouts?

The mufflers are like great big drums, in the one pic you can see fresh metal breakage at the left end of the crack, if anything internal, they make all kinds of noises.
In your pics the mufflers are in sad shape, its possible they can be fixed depending on how bad the corrosion is internally.
You might see about getting Fister to update them and maybe repair. (Don't know if they repair too....) Otherwise the most economical fix can be used ones from a yard.. Or off the net, Fleabay etc..
I would just crawl under and grab them and pull in different directions, with cracks that big I'm surprised its not buzzing very loud.
If you ever take the mufflers out youll see how many places they could squeek, if you've lost bolts for the heat shields they lay
against the mufflers, I had to clean mine they had picked up some dirt between the muffler and fender side shield and made
a sort of scraping sound that came and went under throttel when shifting gears..
sheetmetal bits rubbing together very likely source, the exhaust if wrapped all over itself under there its pretty tight so lots of opportunity..
Could also be a strut/shock bushing..
When I look at the pics, it looks like multiple small problems that will eventually become a larger one.
Its very easy to take the rear bumper cover off, then you can see it all much better and grab stuff and shake to see if you can find the culprit.
Occurred to me the rear motor mounts should be looked at too, rubber bushings and metal...... squeek
Agree with those that said your mufflers are rotted out. On the motor mount issue, if there is one motor mount that is shot and one that is still good you can see this if you get yourself eye level with the muffler tips and can see the bottom of the catalytic converters. They will not be level with the road. One side will be lower than the other. In that case, you need new motor mounts. FCP Euro has a good DIY video, but they neglect to mention that when the corrosion is that bad on your mufflers, you will need a 6' breaker bar to get the 13mm nut off the mount.
Its possible they can be welded back up, but you might look for a used pair in decent shape and after you buy them, send to Fister. When they come back replace the old ones.
Ok, Ill go out on a limb here and say that there is a good chance that your fan belt drive pulley somehow got bent.
The reason I say that is because the crankcase locating boss sits within about 2mm or less from back of drive pulley. Im guessing the serpentine drive pulley is rubbing either on that aluminum boss or something got broken off in the bore for the locating pin.
You can check runout with dial micrometer.
I find that an automotive stethoscope helps in locating the noise. Touch it to the engine in different places. The noise gets louder as you get closer to the source.
Loads of well meant advice what it could be but the sound file gives a strong clue.
It doesnt sound like a broken weld inside the mufflers, that sounds entirely different. Give them a kick and if they rattle you'll know how that would sound.
It could be the pulley on the crankshaft touching something every crank revolution but the frequency is too low for that. The sound occurs 20 times in the 3 second long sound/video clip, so 400 times per minute. The engine won't idle at 400 rpm, so it's not that.
However, considering 800rpm is a valid idle rpm it points to something that happens every other revolution. As it's a 4 stroke engine, each cilinder exhausts once every two crank revolutions.
I would therefore look for one single cilinder on the right bank (= bank 2) that leaks exhaust gas between cil.head and exhaust manifold or a loose spark plug as mentioned earlier.
I don't believe a split muffler makes that sound, at least mine didn't but hold your hand below the split and feel whether any pulsing is in sync with the noise.
From your sound (pun intended 😉
approach I am confident you can tackle this yourself and do not need to take it to a mechanic.
I agree with hardtailer that noise happens at half the speed of the crank.
Doesnt really sound like an exhaust leak though. More like metal to metal.
That stethoscope should help solve the mystery.
I know its been a while but Im a college student so I couldnt work on it until the summer lol. So I followed some of what Ive heard here, and I used the stethoscope on the spark plugs. I found out that the middle plug on the right side sounded like the squeak so I removed it and found some oil inside the tube. I dont know if its dirt or actually oil so Ill attach the best pic I have of it. I know that oil inside means I need to change the tubing but could that be the source of the squeak?
Yes!! So it actually was the driver side spark plug (the middle one). It wasnt torqued properly at all so it was slowly detightening. Then on top of that, the tubing was cracked so after replacing all the tubings and retorquing the spark plug, the sounds went away!
Thank you all for your help!
that is amazing news, what a relief. I was thinking it was the input shaft or something expensive like that, thank you so much for your insight and your help!!!!!!
If that is what is wrong then a drive to your mechanic will be okay. However, you should make sure it is not a loose spark plug. A loose spark plug will make a squeak or whistling sound. It has happened to several people and all it was was a loose spark plug.
I just wanna make sure that if it is a loose spark plug its not gonna cause any catastrophic damage or make things worse. If it does, Ill just have it towed. But it does drive just fine just that annoying sound.
