Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Recently I have repaired several plastic items with my soldering iron.

All i did was to dot the iron on the plastic to test that it melted the sides together and the ran the iron along the crack to seal it. It worked a treat, you heard it here first
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

I've checked the OEMs and everybody reckons they aren't that good, had anybody found an alternative (cheeped) option?

I have a small pen sized battery powered item from Lidl and used it to repair the rear high level stop lamp on my car.

That's what I've heard too, Indy reckons it's 4 hours labour, don't fancy dropping the engine myself tbh, I'm unsure if I should replace the water pump and stat whilst it's drained but that's even more money lol

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.
0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

So it looks like I need a new expansion bottle due to a small crack at the rear. It's the early version and the price is ludicrous plus it's apparently a 4 hour job to do. I've checked the OEMs and everybody reckons they aren't that good, had anybody found an alternative (cheeped) option?
Thanks

Try these for a used one. Used them years ago for a replacement 986 tank. Now that was a chewy job requiring an additional joint in the forearm.
That's my thread.
My car is also a 2001 (late 2000 build). OPC parts department said I had the later bottle based on my chassis number but the leaky aftermarket tank that was fitted was the earlier type.
You can fit the later tank on the earlier cars without any issue. The only 3 differences are.
- No bracket for the C4 fuel filter. Easy enough to secure with a jubilee etc
- Tank is slightly longer but there's plenty of room at the back so zero issue
- Coolant level sensor is fitter differently. You can just bend the sensor and it fits easy
It's not a technically difficult job to change but it's awkward as hell. I didn't drop my engine as I didn't have a deep enough socket for the mounts. It took me best part of a day, most of which was spent turning the tanks in various ways to try to get them in/out while swearing.
I also didn't fully drain my coolant system for this job. I syphoned off what was in the tank only. Have since done the water pump and LTT.
Before you throw the bottle away try this:
Recently I have repaired several plastic items with my soldering iron.
I have a small pen sized battery powered item from Lidl and used it to repair the rear high level stop lamp on my car. One of the 2 halves had split and cracked i several places.
All i did was to dot the iron on the plastic to test that it melted the sides together and the ran the iron along the crack to seal it.

I have a cracked washer bottle on my volvo and will try and do the same there so it might also work on your pressurized header tank, could save you £400+ if it works.
