Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

One guy on this site said it worked for him if he turned -20 then set, +20 and then set and finally 0 and the set, delete the fault and bingo!
Leading evidence: 'Set +20' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Set +20' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Im assuming the system puts 11v in the sensor and depending on position gives a signal anywhere between 0-11v back out which will correlate to an angle (set during calibration process).

Not exactly what I asked but Ill give them the benefit of the doubt and test the sensor.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all hope youre all good!
Ive been reading some of the posts on rennlist, some are certainly interesting and clearly some of the members are pretty intelligent and know their stuff when it comes to 996s.
Ive jumping from thread to thread looking for answers to a particular problem, adding questions as I go and getting interesting feedback but not a definitive answer. So I thought I start a thread. Hope you can help.
i have a 1999, 996 C4 that Ive renovated. Im almost finished and looking forward to finally driving it this summer. I have a problem where my diagnostics tells me the Steering Angle Sensor 4440 fault. Im determined to fix it myself but I need a bit of help understanding the problem.
can someone tell me:
If I rotated the steering angle sensor 10, 20, 30, 40, .. times will it eventually break? Im assuming the system puts 11v in the sensor and depending on position gives a signal anywhere between 0-11v back out which will correlate to an angle (set during calibration process). If true little short of hitting it with a hammer it wont break.
The clock spring, does this have anything to do with the steering angle sensor? Im assuming this just supplies power to the airbag and horn and as long as the horn and airbag is working the clock spring is fine.
hope someone knows the answers as this will help me understand the problem and figure out the answer.
Thanks in advance 👍😁
Steering angle sensor is an optical device and can turn in circles indefinitely.
The clockspring only works the horn, airbag, and tiptronic switches. It CANNOT turn more than 3 revolutions without breaking.
Just as I thought. Thanks!
Just taken the steering angle sensor out for bench test. It is working then the fault must be calibration.
Bought Durametric system and tried to calibrate the sensor. Some people say this system wont calibrate the 996 but the sell said it would. One guy on this site said it worked for him if he turned -20 then set, +20 and then set and finally 0 and the set, delete the fault and bingo! I tried that but couldnt delete the fault. However every time I pressed set the steering wheel gave a little wiggle so it must be doing something. Need to put some more effort into the deleting side I think find out whats going wrong.
This is the message I got from Durametric.
Thank you for reaching out. Fault code 4440 results when the actual value of the steering angle value is implausible. This issue has four possible causes:
- Short circuit to ground/battery+ or open circuit
- Steering angle sensor calibration incorrect
- Wiring/plug connection faulty
- Steering angle sensor faulty
In your customer's case, it is very possible an issue other than the calibration is the cause of the fault.
We hope this helps.
