The whine was fixed because I replaced the alternator.
Leading evidence: 'Replace alternator' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Reconnect /brace a couple of times' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I changed the other two but had trouble locking down the nut on the back.

Prior to replacing the alternator, I replaced all three tensioner pulleys to "fix" the whine.

We used a ten dollar automotive stethoscope to listen to alternator bearing and heard it rattling.

He used a ten dollar stethoscope to listen to pulleys etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Gents,
I'm replacing all three roller pulleys/idler tensioner/lower and upper pulley or whatever you call them. Does anyone know the torque specs for each one of the roller pulleys? I think they're all different torque specs?

High pitched whine is still there. All three pulleys needed replacing but it didn't stop the high pitched whine. Hear it loud in the cabin, with engine bay open it sounds very close to the alternator pulley......Replacing alternator pulley next!!!
Any insight is always appreciated!!
Secondary air pump also makes noise if you have one, alternator bushings can be worn also.
Some engines just whine though, mine is quite noisy!
If you have an alternator with a clutch pulley, that is unlikely to be making the noise as it could only do it on the overrun not all the time.
Have you changed out the head unit or amp, or any of its wiring...?
Try
pulling the fuse for the head unit and the fuse for the amp
.
See if the stops your whine...
I havent changed out anything. Pull the fuse for the alternator? According to the Google..
"The alternator on a Porsche 996 does not have a fuse in the traditional sense, but rather a fusible link. This link is a wire that melts under heavy electrical load, protecting the alternator from damage. The fusible link is located in the Power Distribution Box, which is situated on the firewall in the passenger's footwell."
No not the alternator 'fuse' .
Like I said, Remove Fuse for Head unit/stereo and the fuse for amp. 'Alternator whine' sometimes is exactly as you describe and comes in over the speakers. Many times it doesn't sound like its coming from the speakers even with stereo off, but is. Do you have an aftermarket stereo..?
To finish this out....ended up going to my man Warren at Rennsport in Sealy, TX. He used a ten dollar stethoscope to listen to pulleys etc. We were able to hear the bearing in the alternator failing. Ended up buying an alternator from Amazon and put it in the next day. I will say the belt I got from the 3 pulley kit on Pelican seemed soft and flexible. Just shredded it this morning. Fortunately, I have a lot of experience removing/replacing that belt!!!
The continental belt from this kit absolutely shredded itself. It definitely happened and happened quickly (couple of weeks). I would stay away from the belt in this kit.
I don't think new belts like that just fail. Something siezed or wasn't lined up correctly. You also have a broken vacumm tube from the changeover valve to the intake resonance flap actuator.
The alternator has a one way bearing on it, it was added after cars were flipping belts off.
High revs, gear changes etc and the alternator doesnt slow down quick enough i think, causing the belt to jump off. Check the one way is working.
The whine was fixed because I replaced the alternator. We used a ten dollar automotive stethoscope to listen to alternator bearing and heard it rattling. Should have used the stethoscope first and listened to all of the bearings. Prior to replacing the alternator, I replaced all three tensioner pulleys to "fix" the whine. My son used a wrench (think it was 14mm) on the backside of the difficult pulley. Approached from passenger side of the pulley and braced it against the block. Wrench came loose and had to reconnect/brace a couple of times but as long as the wrench is the right size, you'll be alright. The new Continental belt was softer and easier to stretch and install than the 20kmile belt it was replacing. After the new, soft Continental belt shredded I put the old one back on and have another 500miles on it. The guys who are challenging my experience with the belt from the three pulley kit don't know what they're talking about. It was soft, stretchy and failed. Ended up putting old, 20k mile, Continental belt back on but carry a new one in the frunk!!
