Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im replacing the bank 1 catalytic converter on my 996 and one of the bolts on the manifold flange is so rusted it will not come out like the other two bolts did. I was able to cut off the nut, but the bolt is frozen within the two flanges. The hex head of the bolt is quite rusted as well, and Im afraid it will round if much torque is applied. Ive used copious amounts of PBBlaster and have heated the bolt red hot twice. Looking for advice on how to proceed.

POST 2Original post

Try twisting the cat and wiggle it off. Dont be affraid to use some force the bolt is done anyways.

This^ While you have everything off, worth it to do a pass with sandpaper or an abrasive wheel to remove some of that surface rust around the bolts. Cleaned up parts work better anyway. 😋

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, tried that. Will try again. there’s not a lot of room with the bank 2 muffler in place and that is held on by bolts that are even more rusted, and definitely don’t want to tweak or break the manifold. Ah, the joy of working on elderly cars that aren’t garage queens.

POST 5Original post

I think I had to use a chisel and 5lb sledge to break a couple of those bolts free.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Finally got it free. Now trying to get it out! The #2 cat is in the way. Tried to lower engine, but last tech to work on car tightened motor mounts to 1,000 ft-lbs. Now researching how to remove rear bumper.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 20049714

1. remove top edge fasteners accessible with the engine lid open 2. remove rear L/R light assemblies (Optional but easier on the way back) 3. remove all fasteners at the bottom edge of the bumper 4. Remove one fastener in each wheel well area, it's upside down (screwed in from bottom to top), it's holding the very front tip of the bumper to the fender 5. Grab front edge of the bumper, firmly pull out to the outside to disengage the bumper from the fender. Disconnect the bumper light connector at the center of the bumper. That will take care of the bumper cover. You can figure out the rest ... the heat shields, the actual inner bumper... their fasteners are easily visible.

POST 8Original post

I had the same problem. I ended up drilling them out and installing new bolts with anti-seize on threads.
