I've just replaced my indicator/wiper switch unit which went fine, but when I removed the steering wheel I noticed that the short wire with the red connector wasn't connected to the spade (the other, longer wire with black connector was fine, as was the airbag wire) .

Suggestion

You'll notice mine didn't have the yellow and red paint blobs yours has, I suspect someone else has taken the wheel off previously and forgotten to reconnect the wire.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've just replaced my indicator/wiper switch unit which went fine, but when I removed the steering wheel I noticed that the short wire with the red connector wasn't connected to the spade (the other, longer wire with black connector was fine, as was the airbag wire) . I haven't noticed that anything wasn't working previously, and now I've reconnected it nothing seems to have changed. Does anyone know what that wire is for?

POST 2Original post

I don't know what the wire is for, but it is normally connected. See attached photo from my 2003 996 C4 when I was part-way through the indicator stalk unit replacement. You'll notice mine didn't have the yellow and red paint blobs yours has, I suspect someone else has taken the wheel off previously and forgotten to reconnect the wire.

POST 3Original post

When I fixed my indicator problem there was one brown wire that didn't connect to anything, chatting to a Car Electrician who owned a 996 he said they were all like that.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks both. I've left it connected but I'm guessing it's something to do with either the OBC or cruise control, neither of which I have, as it doesn't seem to have affected anything.

POST 5Original post

The wire is the earth for the steering wheel .. the horn needs it to work as the steering column is not earthed . On some cars however the coating on the steering column roller bearing has worn away enough so that the column is earthed and the horn will function without this wire . Basic rule of thumb though .. if not connected your horns won't work .
