If so, you could try to freeze the problematic headlight at the proper location (while the headlight motors are running through their motions at startup) and manually adjust the functional headlight to match.

Suspected cause
It sounds like an issue with manual adjustment - probably a broken adjustment gear.

The headlamp strategy requires unseating the headlamp, which would become a tedious process (when you have to reseat the lamp to check the beam pattern).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
i have owned my 996 for the pat 13 years and I brought my it in for its annual car test here in Ireland, and unfortunately, it failed due to the driver's side xenon headlight being out of alignment.
I took the car to Porsche this morning, but they told me the adjuster is stuck and theyre unable to realign it. Their solution was to replace the entire headlight unitfor 3,000.
Instead, I found a replacement adjuster on eBay for around $50. Has anyone here had experience replacing this part, or dealing with a similar issue? I'd really prefer not to spend 3k on a new headlight if it can be avoided.
Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was told the same thing. The issue with my light is that I bought new projectors to upgrade and wasn't able to get it done correctly. My dealer said they couldn't aim the light and I needed a new one.
I do have an auto leveling motor out of an old headlight I would be able to sell for the same price as that eBay ad. I can put that money toward a new headlight. I do not have to inspect my car here in Maryland since its 20+ years old, so I am going to leave it alone for a while. It's aimed a little high but does the job.
That means your problem is unlikely to be solved by purchasing that leveling motor. It sounds like an issue with manual adjustment - probably a broken adjustment gear.
Are you able to pass your annual inspection if your headlights with non-functional leveling motors, but the headlights are aimed properly? If so, you could try to freeze the problematic headlight at the proper location (while the headlight motors are running through their motions at startup) and manually adjust the functional headlight to match. You wont have the headlight tilt when the high-beams are enabled, but you wont have to spend a penny.
Otherwise, your next economical options are to purchase a used headlight - functioning or not - and replace, or rebuild, your problematic one.
Hi there
i dont think they check the levelling ...
if they are aimed properly it would be ok
how can i freeze them at the proper location (while the headlight motors are running through their motions at startup)
Thats good. You can either unplug the Litronic module or unplug the connector for the leveling motors at the the headlamps.
I would suggest unplugging the module. The headlamp strategy requires unseating the headlamp, which would become a tedious process (when you have to reseat the lamp to check the beam pattern).
Also, are you able to adjust the headlamp laterally? Ive found that the lateral adjustment does change the height of the beam.
Yea it could be the issue but the headlight will go to the set position even if the sensor is broken. It just wont move when going down the road. I would fix it and see if it helps.
There is an independant adjustment for manual adjustment (the normal static position) and the automatic positioning when driving. It sounds like your static position is off but maybe its because the auto function is in-op.
There was a thread a week or so ago that was talking about the manual adjuster not moving the projector because they went too far. If u pull the healight, remove the back cover and insert the adjuster tool. U should be able to see the rod and gear and maybe figure out why its not moving. My light has a cracked ball cup for one intenal adjuster arms. I was able to snap it back into place and make my adjustent
U really need to pull the light and observe the mechanism to see whats going on.
I dont think so but a really cant remember as it was a couple years ago when i had the light out. That might be the part thats broken or jamed on yours?
Also this sensors r kinda pricey. I bought used from a porsche yard at a big discount. Just a fyi if u dont want to spend a lot of testing
I think I’ve found the issue.
I'm in Ireland, so my car is right-hand drive (RHD). Inside the Porsche 996 headlight housing, there’s a rotary switch or selector dial, usually marked with “O” and “T.” This isn’t an electronic setting—it’s a mechanical switch that adjusts the beam pattern depending on which side of the road you drive on.
What “O” and “T” mean:
“O” stands for “Oben”
(German for “up”) — the default setting for left-hand drive (LHD) cars, used in countries where you drive on the right (like most of Europe and the US).
“T” stands for “Tourist”
— this setting adjusts the beam slightly downward and to the right, suitable for RHD countries like the UK, Ireland, Japan, and Australia. It’s meant to prevent dazzling oncoming drivers when driving temporarily in countries with opposite road rules.
The right headlight was set to “O.” Once I switched it to “T,” the beam dropped significantly and is now well within tolerance.
I’m honestly surprised the main dealer missed this—along with the broken rear sensor on the control arm. Very poor attention to detail. They quoted me €3,000 for a new headlight...very poor IMO
I’ll wait for the new sensor to arrive and then get the car retested. If everything checks out, I’ll definitely be going back to the dealer to ask for an explanation.
Thanks to everyone for your tips!
