So........I thought I would see if anyone out there knows how expensive the problem is likely to be.

I guess that the compressor is working as the revs change when it engages.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone I have a 1999, 996 C4 and I love it. But Summer is here and my air con doesn't work. So in a moment of madness ( and because it was next door to where I was shopping ) I went to Halfords to see about a refrigerant top up. The guy put a gauge on the system ( which showed empty ) and sprayed a bit of coolant in until the gauge showed the right pressure ( while the engine was running and the air con on ) but it did no good and did not take a lot of gas to fill it. So........I thought I would see if anyone out there knows how expensive the problem is likely to be. I guess that the compressor is working as the revs change when it engages. Also, as it took to little gas ( which is still showing pressure some weeks after so no leaks ) to fill up the system is it possible that there is just air in there ( does it need bleeding? ) or is a component like the receiver stopping the gas getting round the system? Any ideas? By the way, Halfords did not charge me and left me with the half full can of refrigerant and a gauge on it. Nick

POST 2Original post

Hmm, I am not an expert but it doesnt sound like Halfords are as good as Kwikfit. I went to Kwikfit 4 weeks ago. They have a machine which they plug into your car. It empties your system, checks for leaks etc, and then fills it up with exactly the right amount of collant needed (850gm for my 2000 C2). All done automatically, so hopefully avoids user error... £45 well spent I would say. Quite a few others on here have used them as well.

POST 3Original post

Based on my experience, and a lot of others on this forum, the problem is 99% likely to be your condensors - they are located at the front of the car and can be accessed by removing the front bumper aka PU. If you shine a torch through the inlets for the cooling air you'll be able to see the condensors, they sit just in front of the rads - typically you'll see a black oily film or a flourescent green liquid on them if they are leaking. Only one of mine wa shot, but I changed both. The job is quite straightforward and you can get the system regassed by kwikfit or Halfords. 12 months after I changed mine the aircon is still working. The original units are made by Behr and can be sourced on line by searching on the correct part number for your car - be careful though as the units are model specific. cheers Ray :thumb:

POST 4Original post

sounds like as stated you may need condensors which if you look through the front grilles you may see leaves and damp patches on the condensors... nip into an indy for a quick check i'm sure they will look at it for you... we have the fully automated system and are currently only charging £40 for it doing..

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your comments guys. One question though, I can see the condensors and they seem to be in good condition also the system seems to be holding pressure though it is taking very little to fill it up. surely if the condensors were leaking then the system would not hold any pressure? PS Credit crunch means that I am trying to get this sorted in the most economical way possible hence the questions and not just taking it to a garage to get it sorted. Can't wait for things to improve, I need new rear tyres soon.........maybe I will downsize to a nice diesel hatchback instead.........or maybe I will just learn to drive slowly!!!! But there is something awesome about the tinkling sound the engine makes as it cools after a good thrash and the smell is great!!!!

POST 6Original post

My condolences Newbie with exactly the same issues...had great advice on this forum...but its going to cost a bit for rads even with DIY. Going down replacing condenser units route myself and winding down windows/ parking car in shade until time/ money is available.

POST 7Original post

Before I changed my condensors I had my system recarged and the aircon worked for 2 weeks. A small leak will take a while to fail. Take your bumper off and it'll be obvious if this is where the problem lies. Ray

POST 8Original post

Also, leave your aircon on the whole time as the refrigerant also acts as a lubricant and keeps the seals in good condition.
