I've had what sounds like a blowing exhaust from day one when the engine warms, had the exhaust checked several times and have gone to the expense of fitting Dansk sports silencers which have, if anything, made things worse.

I've been told that the fuel/air mixture changes when the engine has warmed, but I wouldn't have thought it was a factory acceptable standard to let 911's out with excessive boom.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can anyone enlighten me as to why the exhaust tone changes so drastically once the engine warms up to running temp? I appreciate that the Cab top will magnify the tone, but even with the hard top on it just doesn't sound right. I've had what sounds like a blowing exhaust from day one when the engine warms, had the exhaust checked several times and have gone to the expense of fitting Dansk sports silencers which have, if anything, made things worse. Even these were replaced FOC by Dansk but to no avail. I've been told that the fuel/air mixture changes when the engine has warmed, but I wouldn't have thought it was a factory acceptable standard to let 911's out with excessive boom. When reversing back into the drive after a run the sound reverberating off the fencing and walls is hideous. Seriously thinking of putting the original silencers back on and e-binning the Dansk system. What checks would an Indy specialist do to determine any underlying causes?

POST 2Original post

that is very odd have you had the Cat inspected ? how many miles do you have

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its a 2001 and just turned 34k, been used as a town car for most of its previous life. I had a similar situation with a Boxster, but not to this extent. As I said it's been checked over several times and there are no clamp or manifold leaks, but its just too big a change in tone to be normal. Other than emissions, what checks can be done on the cats?
