it doesn't go away. Not sure if it's cosmoline(sp?) or what. Car has about 1,300 miles on it now. It's only when I turn on the a/c. Not really a burnt smell so to speak but maybe some of you know what I'm talking about.
My AC has a smell, but only if I turn on the AC and not at the coldest temp (1 bar over or warmer). My wife describes it as "ten year old closet smell." I'm not sure that helps. I think it's a weird leathery smell.
I just pretend it's some funky German new car scent.
Does anyone know what the heck this is?
Several discussions here about that (and it is cosmoline). Try looking around the knowledge database you might find something useful.
yup.

I love it. Now you go the hang of it!
TC - My car has 18k miles on it, and while I don't smell it inside, I can still smell it cooking off the motor and exhaust parts after I park the car from a drive - it takes a while to all come off.

Thanks everyone for the input. I hope this smell goes away because it's not real pleasant. Of course if I were to eat some Mexican food it could be worse...
If you haven't removed the Cosmoline you should. My smell went away after I spent the day taking that stuff off of the wheels and other misc areas.

You might check the condensation drains for the ac. If they get cloged you might collect moisture in the system and it can grow bugs. The ac is always on even when you run the heater. It only goes off with the econ switch.

Have you considered the following before entering your Cayman?
a) Shower w/soap
b) New brand of deoderant
c) Clean clothing
That's good to know as I still have it at 61__ after more spirited (non-rush hour) drives. Will it ever go away? I kind of like it. Spouse calls it the "smells like the car's been working hard" smell.
Just recently, I got this weird and unpleasant smell in my car after 5 months of ownership. I have never had this smell before. Thus I dont think it cosmoline. I wonder what smell is it? It comes out from the AC.
Anyone has any ideas what is it?
Might be a bit of plastic/nylon trash stuck to a hot underside component. Happened to one of my bmws once. I never saw (what must have been the bag) but it stank for a week or two until it burned off.
As you can see by my post count, Newbie here. While I think I also smell Cosmoline, I never noticed it on any of my Audi's.
It is cosmoline and it will go away. Mine had it so bad my eyes would almost water. After about 2000 miles, it just dissappeared!
