Evo doesn't seem to say avoid older cars, just that the engine is fairly bulletproof (which seems to be what people think anyway) and that just as older cars will have more wear, less used cars may have some electrical components with issues.

There wasn't a pre and post facelift Turbo, every year there may have been small spec changes but essentially the same car since 2000.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sorry for my first post being a question but I'm not sure what way to go so looking to the collective experience for some help.
I'm looking for a sensible family car now that fatherhood his hit and a 996 is at the top of the list but, hey ho, might as well jump in with both feet and go for a turbo (we do have another slightly more sensible car so it's not a completely stupid move).
I looked at a couple of turbos recently and one thing was making me wonder.
Car A - reasonable spec, good colour combo, pre facelift, 70k miles.
Car B - reasonable spec, good colour combo, post facelift, 35k miles.
There seems to be about a £5k difference in price between pre and post facelift for a 2 year difference and a 35k mile difference (not just these 2 cars but give or take in general).
As far as I can tell the facelift on the turbo wasn't huge (glovebox, few interior pieces) so... assuming Car A goes through an inspection ok would it be a better option in terms of having an instant 5k slush fund should anything go wrong? A less used car doesn't necessarily mean things won't go wrong.
If it makes a difference the dealer has also said it will have a new clutch and be serviced before delivery. I would do about 6-8k miles a year and expect to keep it for 3-4 years (maybe longer if I'm having fun).
I doubt in 4 years time a car with 65k miles would command more than a 5k premium over a car with 100k miles. Or am I wrong on that???
Cheers

A factor will be the warranty, official or independent ?
If it was me, and I could afford the extra £5000, I would go for the later car. You will then have the benefit of the glove box and satin black switches! There are a couple of other things that were added along the way too. Very early build Turbos had Turbo Look wheels, rather than the hollow spoke Turbo wheels. Rain sensor was an option on early cars, and standard on later ones. Just little things, but they add up.
When it comes to selling it, there WILL be a difference between a 65K and 100K car. Buyers will be much more attracted to the 65K car, and the difference probably won't be £5000, but it might be close. Turbo engines are fairly bullet-proof, and 100K should be no problem, but it is a psychological barrier to many buyers.
Just my 2p's worth.
i always look to buy the lowest milage and newest car i can afford, for 5k i think it is a no brainer if you can afford it (and the car turns out ok)
cheers
If you buy the July edition of EVO magazine (the issue that's about to hit the shelves) there is a buying guide on the 996 Turbo. It might help you decide on your choice.

So far it seems unanimous!!! I was thinking that the younger car would be a better bet but the older one with a new clutch and service makes up for it somewhat.
I have to admit there are some hideous colour combos out there. I've been looking through while my car has been up for sale and blue with savanah or silver with green is unbelievable. It has to be black interior for me (call me boring but I don't think I could live with some of the others on a daily basis).
I've just bought Evo so I'll have a wee read of it later on and see what they are saying.
Interesting.... Evo doesn't seem to say avoid older cars, just that the engine is fairly bulletproof (which seems to be what people think anyway) and that just as older cars will have more wear, less used cars may have some electrical components with issues.
2004 is too much in the sense of buy the car but have no maintenance fund left for it.
I'm comparing 2000 with 2002. Not particularly bothered about PCM as I have a Becker Cascade sitting on a shelf from the old car. I would probably put that in and get the Console delete option later on to get rid of the CD holder.
For what it is worth, assuming both cars are OK, get the less expensive car, it will do the same job as the other one and will not depreciate as much as the expensive car. £5K is £5K less to waste as the price difference of the two cars will close with time
Gentlemen,
After Reading all the content of this post I have lowered my sights in the quest for TT ownership
I was looking for a " facelift" which all seem to be plus 30k but in reality a pre facelift is much the same car less a cup holder and a glovebox and a later no. Plate
Well I don't allow myself to drink in my porker and I don't wear gloves
I will be switching my pp so who will know anyway, not that I care anyhow!
Milelage has never worried me and if bought in the right condition a 5k reserve towards a new engine should shitt happen will get me behind a TT steering wheel that much sooner
