Hey all! I’m new to the community and
Porsche
ownership! Recently bought an
06 Cayman S
(MT) with
Bose
CDR24
69kmiles. Got a PPI before I bought the car and they recommended new battery (2010, so.. 10yr old battery). Few days in, loving it and driving it. Let it sit for a day,
next
morning.. didn’t start. Lights flash, windows go down, clicking but not cranking over. So.. I thought, ok, new battery time. Got one from autozone, installed myself with the air hose and everything. Made sure cold crank was good. Boom! She starts fine! Drive a few days, all good. Let her sit for 2 days and boom! Same damn problem as with the old battery. I had to jump her using my other Jeep and this time airbag light comes on :/...then had to jump it again 2hrs later. I’ve been reading these forums and all types of possibilities it could be (thanks to you guys, seriously!). Really not sure what issue could be? Some kinda parasitic draw draining it? Ignition switch? Positive cable to battery terminal that’s impossible to get strangely? Clutch interlock switch? Starter solenoid/switch? Crank position sensor? Immobilizer? ... I mean list goes on, I can’t find any thread or ‘exact’ answer or fix for this issue. I’m in SoCal and I’m not storing the car for winter, just a day or 2 or 3 not driving so idk about the trickle charging
CTEK
thing. Just a bummer.. I just got her and I wanna drive her but she’s acting strange. Any more info or knowledge you guys have would be appreciated greatly! -ALP

Check your positive lead cable they have been know to corrode at the opposite end of the battery. I had a similar issue , I had find a replacement cable which was no easy task. The newer replacement cable from
Porsche
is slightly different and you need to get a mod kit that was 6 monthsback ordered everywhere, including Germany. This pertains to 06 and 07 year models. Not sure that is your problem but I would keep an eye on the cable non the less!
Yea, I read that I think in one of your posts a while back. It’s good to have it checked if it is/isn’t the exact issue. Any link or info you can provide where/how you got yours? Thnx
UPDATE
Took it to local Porsche dealer ($200) just to look at the damn thing
smh
Called later today and they said ‘bad fuel cell in battery’ I really hope it is that simple. Taking it back to autozone to swap it out. Gonna have them test it before leaving this time!
Autozone tested it and said, 12.3V was “good but a tiny bit low” they said battery was “ok” and I said “No sir”. Exchanged for a new one for free. Reads at 13V (Duralast h7 dlg w/ air tube). Load test came out fine, started over and over no issues. So far, so good. Just heads up.. never take another person/ tech’s word as something being “ok” if you feel in your gut it’s not.
Well great that you sorted that out. A bad cell is often the problem with batteries that seems "ok"
Happy motoring
For my last two batteries (just replaced one last month) I used an H8. Advanced Auto Platinum AGM - rated at 900CCA. Yeah, overkill, but for me a tell that I need a new battery is when my
Pioneer
NAV system does a reboot when I restart the car while it was playing. OEM batteries would be fine only when they were new. But after a year, the voltage drop when cranking reset the NAV electronics. Its a minor annoyance but it tells me the power delivery is insufficient. Once I even wired the headunit directly to the battery (as a test), and it still rebooted on startup. That eliminated a momentary drop caused by the ignition switch.
The 900CCA AGM was good (meaning the radio didn't reboot in the middle of a song) for over 3.5 yrs. It never failed to start the car but I noticed that my battery maintainer was taking longer to get a full (green light) charge. I had it tested and it only produced ~700 CCA and only about 12.25 V. While that's plenty to start the car, it was well below its rating, I usually only get 4 yrs out of a battery and I didn't want it to fail at an inconvenient moment. So I took advantage of a 25% off coupon and got the replacement for $150+tax installed.
BTW, that night I connected the maintainer overnight, then disconnected and let it set for an hour. It tested at over 1100CCA.
Having your car not start up is worrying no matter what the situation. Good thing you’re taking precautions so it won’t “surprise” you one of these days
