Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The dealer checked the trans fluid and found metal pieces.
Leading evidence: 'Check trans fluid and found metal pieces' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Consider asking for a magnetic drain plug installed on the trans

Fortunately the car was under warranty, since the transmission was replaced.

Suggestion
The RMS is fine and we're replacing the clutch at the same time which was very worn as it turned out.

Suggestion
There wasn't much of a warning, just increasingly loud transmission whine and some roughness changing gears, got the car home very carefully, then trailered off to my mechanic.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Don't exactly know what's happened but the manual gearbox main roller bearing has disintegrated. Not very happy about it. There wasn't much of a warning, just increasingly loud transmission whine and some roughness changing gears, got the car home very carefully, then trailered off to my mechanic. Diff is out, can't tell yet how damaged it is, box coming out
next
week, there is a fluid leak but it's not run dry and there's no obvious overheating. Not quite sure what to do

. Do I strip it down and repair or swap it for a new warranted unit? And what about the diff, shall I stick with the Quaife or might that be part of the problem? At 80k I'm guessing I should replace the clutch at the same time even though I was hoping to make it last to 100 on account of being Ms Smooth with the gears. Anything else to think about while I'm at it?
First - very sorry to hear of your problem. My thought is that you will end up with a replacement with a remanufactured transmission, as opposed to a new unit or rebuilding yours. As a possible point of reference, my 2007 987.1C had very much the same symptoms at 22,000+ miles. The dealer checked the trans fluid and found metal pieces. Fortunately the car was under warranty, since the transmission was replaced. I have to assume that it was a remanufacured unit, as
Porsche
was no longer installing 5 speed units at that time. Wishing you the best of luck with your replacement or repair.
Sorry to hear about your problem. They hopefully will check your flywheel and rear main seal while they are in there. Doing the clutch is the right thing too.
Good luck
Update on the issues - the box is trashed as you might expect with having ball bearings circulating for a while
So I'm getting a new one as a swap from
Porsche
, costs £3000 plus Vat and has a 2 year warranty, reasonable value I think. Peace of mind I guess as well. The Quaife has gone but the new box comes complete with the standard open diff and I'm going to leave it that way. The RMS is fine and we're replacing the clutch at the same time which was very worn as it turned out. Ho hum. Looking forward to getting her back after Easter.
Although no doubt the required work "hurts" a bunch, it's good to read that you are keeping as philosophical about it as you can. Best wishes that you have good luck from here on.
She's back. And better than before. Nice new clutch is lighter and springier, and the gears are very smooth. And the problem I had with 1st (probably worn synchro or fork) has gone. Seems a bit quieter too. A steep price to pay but will keep her on the road for many years to come. And no LWFW, no more performance mods for me now. I've ordered a magnetic transmission drain plug from Drainplugmagnets.com (not a sponsor here I believe) and will install when she gets serviced in 1500 miles, along with the magnetic engine oil drain plug that you can actually buy here in the UK.
No I didn't have a LWFW, had heard they could be rough on the engine so didn't bother. I did have a Quaife but I doubt that caused a problem 12,000 miles after the install. But you never know ....
Sounds like you didn't really miss having the Quaife?
I was thinking about getting it, but not sure how much difference it'll make without pushing the corners very hard.
Well, for me it was a bit of an experiment and I wouldn't do it again unless
I wanted to track the car a lot. It was great for driving in the wet on worn
Sottozero winter tyres, but on fresh Pilot Alpin 4s I don't think I needed
it. However if I buy a new car I'll definitely look for a factory LSD.
Hi, sorry to dig up an old thread but I've same issues. I had a transmission failure 10k miles after installing Quaife, same symptoms as you speedgirl.
That was on my base

I refused the gearbox swap from
Porsche
and I get a used gearbox from a breaker (five time cheaper).
I will reinstall the Quaife diff on the new gearbox once cleaned ...
Quaife diff is really enjoyable on my narrow 17 inches rims!
