my 2009
Boxster
is not producing sufficient voltage. I charged battery and it shows 12.3 V however, when I start the car it hover around 12V, so looks like the problem may be with alternator. How it became is a long story but polarity of batter was reversed and resulted in 3 fused burned. I replaced fuses and car started without any problem. left it fr a while, came back and could not get ignition (car would turn, could smell gas etc.). After thinkering for a bit and checking fuse box, decided to putfuse in position D4 and .. all works well. After running car foe about 30 min, got "Battery Generator" warning and that prompted me to investigate voltage at the battery. I am still puzzled why placing fuse in "designated" empty space allowed ignition (this space is related to
DME
control unit TRM87 Injection valves (only SRE - anyone know what SRE stands for?) where D3 is responsible for
DME
control unit TRM30). How come that this solved issue? Do I really have problem with alternator (planning to replace voltage regulator just in case. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
With polarity reversal, nothing would surprise me. No idea about putting a fuse in a blank position. If that position really wasn't supposed to have a fuse - normally in
Porsche
world - one of the contacts for it would be missing in the fuse box (easy to see with the fuse removed.) There is a fairly good chance you blew out the voltage regulator, but also the possibility you blew out diodes on the alternator. In that case - a new or rebuilt one is your best bet.
Pure guess but maybe the multiple fuse positions may have something to do with a change in
DME
manufacturers or port injection for the base engine or direct injection on the S. No idea why switching allows operation, or whether it's safe to do so.
Your alternator could be toast or maybe there's a fusible link or wire burned somewhere between alternator and battery preventing power transfer. Since these things are 4 wheel computers I'd guess that sorting this out will be a horror show. Maybe a specialist with high limit credit card in hand...
One thing that is strange no warning on the dash related to alternator not charging.
thank you for insights and advice.
I run OBDC tool and no issues reported, you are right, it might be wire issue. Will investigate further. Thanks for feedback.
I recall reading somewhere or other that there is a electrical distribution module in the front of the car with some high value fuses or fusible links. You may want to start there. I'd suspect it would be at the end of the positive battery cable. Just a WAG.
