It was the first thing I had to pay for that wasn't covered by my extended warranty, and yeah it was like $700 bucks.

Had to take it to Porsche of Monterey Monday AM to have cables replaced before the 800 mile drive home to Tucson.

Both cables were replaced for a cost of $1110.18, including tax, labor, and overnight shipping.

But I Also saw that if could hapen again & replacing the cable was the best long term fix.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been looking on line are the shift cable in the $400.00 price range? the cable was on the trans. could it have come off the shifter? I have seen in some post that the cable can pop off. But I Also saw that if could hapen again & replacing the cable was the best long term fix. any advise??
dealer responded with one cable broken & the other damaged. parts @ $428.00 & service @700.00 I live in the Seattle area. like every thing seem like alot.. still would to hear how common this is?
I got the car back took about a week for parts. dealer was very helpful. robert larson tacoma wa. still think the hr charged @ 6 might have been on the high side, they did offer a PCA discount of 10%.. car shifts great & I think the cable? may have being going out as it was very hard to shift into reverse...MY ? IS STILL HAS ANYONE ALSO HAD THIS HAPPEN
I'ts not an uncommon problem. Mine went at 35,000 miles. 06 car. 911's have similar issues. Mine cables cost GBP 420.00 fitted, so your dealer is very expensive!
Glad your fixed OK now though
Mine didn't break, but it kept coming off the transaxle, and since I had an aftermarket short shift kit installed, they denied me warranty coverage, cost about $700 parts and labor.
Mine went after 60,000 miles too. Unfortunately it broke on the tranny-side of the cable--if they break under the shifter you can just replace the end link there and be done with it.
It was the first thing I had to pay for that wasn't covered by my extended warranty, and yeah it was like $700 bucks.
believe it or not, mine broke twice. Once immediately after the warantee ended, Porsche covered it under goodwill. The next time last week (13 months later). $1000 CAN
Mine broke at 56k miles. I got new cables from Sunset for $352 with the PCA discount & installed them myself:

Just got home from having my 08 CS towed to the Porsche Dealer with what I strongly suspect is a broken shifter cable. My car has 11,062 miles on it now. Bought it new, enjoy the car, but I do not track it, or drive it hard. So add my story to the rest of the broken shifter cable veterans, I was up shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear from a traffic light when the shifter just started to freewheel in my hand, I called Porsche Roadside assistance and they hooked me up with a towing service / flatbed, next thing I know I am filling out a night drop for service on Monday.
Mine happened at 93,000 miles on my 104th track day, on my 3rd day of a 3 day DE at Laguna Seca. The driver's side cable popped off the transmission end shifting from 3rd to 4th after passing a Boxster between 5 & 6.
After limping back to the pits, I was able to pop it back on, but it kept popping off, even after attempting to cable tie it to the ball end on the tranny.
Had to take it to Porsche of Monterey Monday AM to have cables replaced before the 800 mile drive home to Tucson. They found the plastic yoke looked partly melted, possibly from proximity to my Accusump oil lines, so they relocated the oil lines further from the cables. Total cost $1098.
I have no complaints. My Cayman has seen a lot of shifts and heat and hard driving on the track, and this was a minor inconvenience (compared to the #5 rod bolt failure that took out my entire lower engine at 90,264 miles at a final cost of $40,000 for my race engine rebuild.... but that's another story....)

I have seen that Evolution Motorsports makes billet aluminum ends for where the cables attach to the shifter. This should take care of that cheap plastic factory ends, but if the cable breaks, or the ends on the transmission side wear out, then you'll still need to buy a set of cables.
Seems like the shifter cable should be considered a normal wear item and replaced at least every 4. year/50000km (30K mi)?
Mine broke april this year, CS 2006 with 60k km.
Wold not be a major problem if Porsche had made this a part of normal service, as it is now, you suddenly find out after being stuck perhaps somewhere up in the mountains.
Add me to the list of 987's with a broken shifter cable. My car is a 2006 Boxster S that had 46,152 miles on it when a cable broke. Both cables were replaced for a cost of $1110.18, including tax, labor, and overnight shipping.
This is the first expense outside of routine maintenance and the replacement of wear items that I have had to address.
Another borken shifter cable here. Cayman S -06, ~62000 km. It broke when changing from 1:st to 2:nd. Repair costs were covered by my insurance, and ended up around $150.
I think Rebel Rock sells an adjustable/ racing grade set of shifter cables. They look nice, I would buy a set myself but I have a brand new stock set already purchased...
1 day after shifter cable change the problem started again. Turned out to be my second gear. Gear box needed replacement. Several Thousand dollars. Not happy right now.
Mine broke Friday. CPO warranty expires today. Local dealer will fix under warranty. Hadn't driven the car in a few weeks due to business travel. Rather be lucky than good.
