Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Guys, I've just looked at a 996 it had emulsified cream like substance on the filler cap and in the front of the tube, the car is used for mostly short journeys and is in A1 condition in every way, FPSH etc... Its being checked out for me at the main dealers but is this a common occurance? Thanks

POST 2Original post

very common; its a small amount of emulsification of the oil and if the car is used for short journeys then it is more prevalent. Nothing to worry about, clean out the 'mayo' every now and then and keep an eye on oil level just as you would normally. Steve

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Steve, thats very reassuring looking forward to getting it now

POST 4Original post

Welcome to the forum dawnrogers. As Iniar confirms, nothing to worry about. I clean my 'mayo' deposit out every couple of months as well. Which 996 model are you looking at? Perhaps we can advise you as to whether it's the best one for your buck? On second thoughts, that may not be a good idea as everyone has their own opinions and that would leave you a bit confused! Just remember to have a Pre-Purchase Inspection check if you're buying private. Good luck with the purchase and let us know when you have bought it. ~ Maxie :thumb:

POST 5Original post

+1 it's normal when you're running short journey's Welcome to the forum. Ray

POST 6Original post

Hi! Yes - completely 'normal'. The filler pipe is long and retains some of the oil in the corrugations which then gets hot, mixes with moiture, lays at the top bit of the pipe, makes you sh*t yourself thinking that your 'head has just gone and looks like this... I saw this on a new 997 that had done - wait for it- 150 miles! No worries!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It looks exactly like your picture... I'm feeling much happier now LOL... Its just getting a check over and an MOT this week and then its mine Thank you for your welcome and for your help, I'm looking forward to posting more on the forum. Dawn

POST 8Original post

Dawn :queen: , you should really get a 'pre purchase inspection' :judge: before you hand over any cash as repairs on these cars can get very expensive  If there are any faults you should be able to get the seller to pay ideally you should get the seller to pay for a Porsche warranty. Full service history is good, but things can and do go wrong. Ray

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Ray, the car is going to porsche for an inspection hopefully today or tomorrow ... if everything is clear then an MOT and then should be able to pick it up Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

POST 10Original post

Dawn, post a picture when you've picked her up. Good luck Ray :thumb:

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Ray, I have my new car  (03 C2 Cab in seal grey with quiet a few options on) I'll post some pictures later once I've had a chance to take some.... loving it already. Thanks for your help and advice. Dawn

POST 12Original post

Brill Dawn, Give it some Welly! Looking forward to seeing the photos cheers Ray

POST 13Original post

I have a 03 996 C4S tip and just noticed same issue inside oil filler cap, car is low miles, 23k, with only 1500 coverd in last 2 years. I will be doing 6-8k pa so hopefully should be OK. Assume I should just clean out and keep an eye on it as was mortified of potential for major problem. Coolant level was just under min when checked with engine cold so topped up as well, assume keep an eye on that as well? Thanks for any advice?

POST 14Original post

Yes, you can clean out the mayo carefully if you're worried about it. I don't bother with mine (and I do lots of short runs). Definitely keep an eye on the coolant level, that's really important. If it's low, you've probably got a small leak in the front rads. (which are prone to this, because they rust with all the debris that goes in there). Cheers.

POST 15Original post

Thanks for that, also spoke to Strasse my local indie who confirmed the same but said pop in tomorrow and they will have a look at to waylay my fears totally Will keepan eye on coolant and check rads for any leaks. Thanks again.
