Reported cause
I had exactly the same symptoms with my 98 when driving through spain, it was the connector to the maf sensor come loose
Leading evidence: 'connector' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'connector' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check excessive carbon build up' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

To try solving this matter I've fitted a New battery, (car has a new alternator when I bought it), replaced a brand new ICV (Idle control valve), cleaned the throttle body and MAF.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had this problem with mine and doing this fixed these issues.
After going through most posts regarding 996 stalling issues and not finding any solutions I've decided to post a new thread to see if anyones got a clue on whats up with my recently acquired '98 996 C2 Tip.
Only happens after car is warmed up and hot. Stalling often happens in following scenarios:
- Car coming to stops (creeping speed)
- Taking off (creeping speed as well) right before accelerating off it dies out
- When I shift the car into reverse
- During traffic light stops car suddenly dies out
At the beginning car starts up immediately without hesitation, now the problem is getting worse, car doesn't want to start, had to give it a few more cranks before it comes back on.
To try solving this matter I've fitted a New battery, (car has a new alternator when I bought it), replaced a brand new ICV (Idle control valve), cleaned the throttle body and MAF.
However it is still stalling on me during above scenarios. While the car is at cruising speed it drives perfectly.
Has anyone had similar problems before or any idea what is wrong with the car?
The fact that this issue occurs when the car is warmed up/hot would lead me to suspect the fuel system as well. As Mike Murphy suggested above, I would look at the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump. Fuel pumps in particular are known for working fine on startup, but faltering on the restart of a warmed up/hot car.
Update**
Had a chat with my local mechanic about the issue, they suggest a fail pump will cause issue when car accelerates or while moving. However my car drives totally fine especially on highways. Is this true on a 996 with a failing / or about to fail pump you will encounter judder or issues while driving? All I'm experiencing now are stalls when the engine heats up, stall in reverse, stall while creeping off traffic lights or in a car park. Symptoms are getting worse, car stalls during idling in parking position, difficult to start up (need to give it a bit of gas on the accelerator while cranking) - "only when engine is hot"
Should I be looking into a fuel pump replacement or it can be other issues?
Thanks in advance
Cheers!
Cleaning your Maf is not the ultimate solution. It could help for some situations. I would replace it. Or at least check the Hot Film Voltage.
Any fault codes present?
Maybe bad crank position sensor.
causes also stalling, difficult hot start etc
No fault codes related to maf and crank position sensor. Had a code related to idle control valve ICV, had it changed and it solved another issue (car used to judder at around 2500rpm while cruising)
Check the idle air control valve that's bolted the side of the throttle body. Remove the 2 screws holding it and then check for excessive carbon build up. Clean the idle motor and the port it sits in and then test the idle motor with a 9V battery to make sure it moves. Then reinstall and see if the problem goes away. I had this problem with mine and doing this fixed these issues.
Did you check the port that the idle air control valve regulates? Mine was built up with carbon. Also, just because the part is new it doesn't mean it works.
When I had a failing fuel pump on an old Audi, had the same symptoms as you as many others have reported the same thing. I am not saying 100% it is the fuel pump, but the symptoms match one that is failing, it starts, it stops, it starts, it stops, gets stuck.
It's the brushes on the commutator normally have worn to their limit or the commutator is completely worn.
Perhaps a similar stall problem on my 2000 996, 60K miles. Can anyone help?
- Recent tune, new fuel pump
- Car starts and idles fine then stalls at slow speeds then..
- Continuous blown C2 fuses (ignition, O2 sensor, fuel injection on this circuit)
- Getting codes for all 6 fuel injectors
- No check engine light
- Slight RPM oscillations
- My usual Porsche mechanic says try disconnecting the O2 sensor, dealer says he doubts that has anything to do with it.
- Could it be the DME?
Help!!!
Did it start behaving like this after the recent tune? Do you have more info on this tune?
I had a similar issue on a boxster once that had a 996 tune in the DME. Ran fine until hot then it wanted to stall because the DME supplied too rich a mixture and it would stall when hot without any load. Fix was to reflash to a 986 tune. Obviously not the exact scenerio you're facing but I'd say from reading that the 'tune' is at fault.
Lets focus on the OPs problem and hopefully he comes back letting us know if it was something fuel system related. Not good to hijack the thread because you issue seems quite different from the OPs, so Id suggest posting a thread for yourself on your specific issues. It helps future 996 owners who search for resolution too!
I can't 100% confirm the problem is solved, the car was kept in storage for years. But whenever I do start it up or drive it around the block it no longer stalls. I didn't do anything except taking the old fuel pump out attempting to fit a new one (however I got the wrong part) so I had to refit the old unit. I'm suspecting if it was just the poor condition of the connector on the fuel pump causing the stall. I'm going to replace a new pump soon when the car is out of storage regardless.
