Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Having looked and listened extremely closely they stated the issue was definitely the muffler.
Leading evidence: 'definitely the muffler' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'definitely the muffler' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check heat shields, etc) and put it down' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My OPC had a look at it (checking the heat shields, etc) and put it down to a broken weld in the tail pipe.

Lloyd - I'll make a point of having our workshop double check the nuts in question.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've a failed baffle on the o/s muffler on my 2004 C4S.
On discussing this with my OPC they find this hard to accept - 'Are you sure? We've never seen this before'.
Does anyone else have experience of this?
Thanks & regards,
Mike
Is this self diagnosis?
If you cut open a 996 silencer you will see there isn't much to go wrong, there are a couple of perforated tubes, no baffle plates.
I would check that the 3 x M8 (13mm spanner size) nuts are tight that secures the silencer to the engine bracket. If loose it sounds like a baffle fault.
Thanks for the responses, guys.

Not self-diagnosis, as such.
My OPC had a look at it (checking the heat shields, etc) and put it down to a broken weld in the tail pipe.
I wasn't convinced and had our own workshops put it up on the ramp to have a look at it - they ruled out a broken weld in the tailpipe and replaced all the bolts & clamps (all were heavily corroded and some loose).
Having done all that the rattle was still there. Having looked and listened extremely closely they stated the issue was definitely the muffler.
In my (strictly inexpert) opinion I'm inclined to agree. The rattle's an intermittent problem and is most apparent when driving around town and coming off the throttle.
The solution - it's a great excuse to fit a Milltek or Designtek sports exhaust which I'll do come the expiry of my warranty in Oct.
And finally, no 996 I've ever owned had a 'death rattle' on start up or at any other time!
Another option:
Give Jim a call mention my name (Lloyd) ask how much to gut your silencers and re-weld the seams, they sound amazing when gutted, better than PSE IMO
