if you get it then you're tied to OPC for (1) servicing and (2) repair work that they spot needs doing; its in the terms that you can't do it yourself or take the car elsewhere.

Suggestion · Original poster

I've seen a couple of threads about some onerous conditions to remain in the warranty (all work including tyres fitted by OPC, no aftermarket sat nav, etc, etc) which would obviously push up the running costs of the car (I was planning to use a good indy).

I thought that as long as the Indy uses official Porsche parts that was ok?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm currently looking to buy a 996 and I'm wondering whether a warranty is worth having. I've seen a couple of threads about some onerous conditions to remain in the warranty (all work including tyres fitted by OPC, no aftermarket sat nav, etc, etc) which would obviously push up the running costs of the car (I was planning to use a good indy). Any thoughts / experiences / opinions? Oh, and what (if anything) do people think is a reasonable premium to pay for a car with a warranty? Oh, and hello! Ben

POST 2Original post

they are pretty strict on the car being standard. if you get it then you're tied to OPC for (1) servicing and (2) repair work that they spot needs doing; its in the terms that you can't do it yourself or take the car elsewhere. if you get it then make sure you get your money back in work done. i certainly did. they had the car for three weeks just before the warranty expired. :floor: there are other warranty solutions out there. warrantywise etc.

POST 3Original post

This has been discussed many times both here and on Pistonheads. I ended up extending mine under the new conditions, having had the OPC fix an oil leak and other bits that would have cost much more than the warranty cost. For comparison my A4 estate will cost £791 to extend the warranty with Audi this year, so £1250 for a car worth twice as much looks better value. For me ultimately it was peace of mind, and I have faith in the OPC that look after it. I also have no desire to modify the car outside its standard spec which may not suit a lot of people. It may make the car easier to sell privately, it might slightly add to its value. Regards Dave

POST 5Original post

My Porsche warranty will expire at the end of this week and I had the same question ie whether to extend the Porsche warranty, take another warranty or not take any warranty at all. I did not claim anything under the existing warranty so in terms of value it was a loss for me but a great peace of mind. I did compare all the private warranties with the OPC warranty and at the end I decided yesterday to extend the OPC warranty (this meant that I had to take out my after market sat nav) as I travel quite a lot to France and the OPC warranty contrary to the other third party warranties provides unlimited coverage in the UK but also in all the other EU countries. You are right in that if you take the OPC warranty, you are tied up to the Porsche network but in terms of getting the best price for any work on the car you can play one OPC against the other.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmm. I've just done a search over at PH and come up with some interesting opinions! Seems like there's a definite split between the "you'd be mad to" and "you'd be mad not to" camps. My original intention was to not go the OPC route. I've always had cars serviced by main dealers in the past, and frankly I'm sick of them trying to steal from me by telling me work needs doing when clearly it doesn't. With regards to a Porsche warranty, if I do end up buying a car with one I think I'll probably be getting everything possible done before it expires, then not bothering to renew. Just need to find a car now! Cheers, Ben

POST 7Original post

I've just renewed mine with OPC! I was fed with worrying about whether to or not and if I did which warranty to go for i.e. Porsche or another warranty provider. In the end I thought sod it just buy the warranty and be done with it. I am 100 % certain nothing will go wrong with my car now it has a warranty, however if I had not renewed it the car would almost certainly loose its special seal thing everyone keeps talking about and major engine failure would be the result due to contamination from swine flu! To top it all OPC would wash their hands of me and it would cost £1,000,000 to repair! This way I am £998,500 ish better off! Remember, ' If it can go wrong it probaly will' c: Just my opinion.

i got the two year warranty save a few £ and i have not got to have go the the inspection next year

POST 9Original post

Not sure it is right to say you are tied to the OPC network. I thought that as long as the Indy uses official Porsche parts that was ok?
