I personally wouldn't take the risk with the only part of the car that touches the road and I'd also be interested to understand why the 295s were much cheaper than 285s, because this isn't the case normally, but I'm sure you've checked the history of them.

Milleplod, why would you want to run 295s on the rear of your car?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am confident the answer is yes. Next to the tyre inflator valve stamped onto the alloy you should see a number? If it is 9.5 or 10 you will be fine but if it unlikely says 8.5 it means you have Boxster alloys, 295s will go on but overhang too much (not always a bad thing as they will act as kerb protection)
Milleplod, why would you want to run 295s on the rear of your car?
Your car is designed for 265/35 and whilst it can take a 285/30 on a 10J wheel, that's really only for facelift cars.
Pre-facelift should have 265/35 as OEM.
What wheels and offset do you have? The rears should be 10J and the fronts are probably 8.5J, but does depend, because it sounds as though your car might not have the original wheels on it (ie. as it left the factory), otherwise I don't understand why it would have 285s on it.
Cheers.
They're on...they feel fine at speed and round fast, twisty bits....and they look good!
The car's handbook shows 285s as an option to 265s if 18" wheels were fitted...which they were from the factory, albeit of a different design, so pre-facelifts
did
have 285s as OEM.
Why 295s? Why not??!! As I said, they look good....and I paid
much
less per pair for N3 PZeros than for what I could get 285s for...not everybody's first choice of tyre probably, but, as I've yet to see the wife driving like a loon....they'll do nicely!
Pete
you need to take care! The 285's will happily fit on the 18" 10J rims
but 295's were meant to fit on 10.5J rims.
Yes they can physically be put on 10J's but the profile of the tyre will be distorted, at normal road speeds probably won't make a lot of difference but at high speed there is the risk of the tyre not coping.
A word of caution... after a recent accident I had [low speed, rear ended]
the
insurance
assessor checked all my tyres were the correct sizes! as well as legal tread depth.

The visual difference between 295s and 285s is negligible (1% width!) . 265 to 285s is more noticeable, but again, slight.
On the point of the 265/285 discussion, I need to clarify this. I had 265s on my facelift (supplied with my CII wheels) and spoke to the OPC about this.
They were crystal clear that the facelift is set up for 285s with wider front wheels and the pre-facelift is set up for 265s with thiner front wheels.
What offset (ET) does your front wheels have? I'd imagine it's still the pre-facelift width.
My manual also says that my car can take 265 and 285 (as does the filler cap), but the specification is different. In other words, 265s on a facelift are not Z-rated.
However, whilst the 10J will take 285s, it is not designed for 295s.
Ask yourself why the 997, which is designed with 295s in mind, comes in 10.5J alloys (18").
I personally wouldn't take the risk with the only part of the car that touches the road and I'd also be interested to understand why the 295s were much cheaper than 285s, because this isn't the case normally, but I'm sure you've checked the history of them.
Cheers.
GD: 295 is 3.508% bigger than 285, not 1%!!! Not only that, this is just the tread width, the tyre is not shaped to fit on a rim smaller than one it was designed for!! It will be all wrong!
Millepod: as you have incorrerct tyre fitment on your wheel plod could fine you and give you three points. Try asking your insurer if they mind you fitting the wrong size tyre to your car, chances are they will withdraw cover. If the tyre fails the manufacturer will also be pleased to point out that incorrect fitment will invalidate any warranty rights you have. You may as well have put the cheapest remould on that would fit on the rim (after all it's just for your missus)! Problem you also have is that you KNOW the car has the wrong tyre on. If the car causes harm, whether or not the tyre is to blame, you risk being hung, drawn and quartered by the police, the
insurance
companies and any victims. You have also now made your incorrect fitment public knowledge!!! Why not get the correct tyre size and opt for some spinneys for that special look you desire!
No, plod couldn't...its not an offence.....my username is 'millep

od, by the way....bit of a giveaway, eh?!!
And its nonsense to say that 'if the car causes harm, whether or not the tyre is to blame, you risk being hung, drawn and quartered.....'. How would that work, I wonder?
I'm not getting drawn into arguments and debates. Thanks for your input. :thumb:

<OFF TOPIC>
Peter, I notice you are a Derbyshire man... have you ever used the multi story car park in Bold Lane? Wow! What a place, voted one of the safest buildings in the world! No one will be nicking a car out of there.
Coolest car park ever, I found the car park made my night more than the restraunt I went to
So others have an idea, these are just some of the facillities in this car park:
The staff look like ex-SAS or Para's
Complex movement sensors under your car
Padded beams so people can not open their door onto your nice paintwork
Gates that are light sensor controlled to follow the actual shape of your car ensuring no person can slip past
Cameras galore
Loud tannoy system
This list goes on
Worth a visit IMO
