Car & Driver:
Photos and Details of the Facelifted 2016 Porsche 911 Emerge
What we all guessed. The next 911 is turbo.
I got mine just in time. 2015 991S Cab NA M/T. Due at dealer Aug 7. Only regret not getting GTS. I think those may appreciate in value.
Let the flames start.
Check out my 2015 911

Not sure why there would be flames? You got yourself a great car, possibly the last in that model that will be NA, Congrats!
Wow, I just read the comments to the article and ppl are killing this transition. Not surprised.

Ok, so who should start the "991 Turbo owners got screwed" thread? Considering that from 991.2 and on, owning a
911
turbo is nothing special anymore.
Were the details officially posted by
Porsche
?
Porsche
is notorious for not giving out info.......... Magazines are notorious for trying to sell copy.
"Over the (past few years), we have reported several times that
Porsche
would kill the naturally aspirated flat-six in the
911
(AS OF THIS FALL")
Utter BS.
After watching the 919s win the Le Mans and listening to the power tools and vacuum cleaner sounds of a small 4 cylinder turbo...... I have some advice for Stuttgart. Build a plant in the US. Keep the NA engines. Let Europe keep the CAFE regulations.
If this is true my being able to get a 991.1 with a Nov allocation was smoke. Wonder when the 2016 split will really occur?
I'm hoping that these pix are still somewhat disguised and we'll see the real deal when
Porsche
gets around to releasing something. The center exhaust, engine grill and overall geometry of the back end just looks wrong to me.
1. RAS. This trickle down from the TT has been expected for some time.
2. 918 steering wheel.
3. Sport Chrono Plus? Overboost, like in the old TT? Did I read that right?
4. Front Axle Lift. About time. I always scrape and want that retrofitted.
5. LCA? On a sports car with one of the best rear views around? OK ....
6. NEW PCM. Touch and HAND WRITING recognitions? WHAT?
7. Active front radiator louvers? Taken from the Macans
8. Cabrio has a mini speedster hump?
9. 4 point led DRLs, also from the Macans
The cosmetics are mundane. HP boost is typical 20HP. Discussion seems to center on low RPM acceleration, not the rush like in NA sports cars at high RPMs. Muscle car guys will love it. Sports car guys will hate it. The torque boost is small, 47? But comes on early. C&D talks about 7th gear downshift for MT. News flash. Nobody uses 7th in the MT. They are hyping the turbos as being good because you don't need to downshift when in 7th? I like to downshift. Where is the fun in just pointing ahead? X51 gets 450 HP vs 430 today. Seems right. Acceleration times are nothing to write home about. 0.1 seconds to 60 is meaningless in the real world.
All those early predictions of 500 HP were ridiculous. Same with the 400 for the 981. Not going to happen out the gate. MPG is up 4.2. This is important. I don't see carbon numbers in grams
Sounds like errors in the translation. I doubt the car will lower 20mm while driving.
Split year, just like 2012, Half 997.2, half 991.1. Same here.
Nice to see a stick is still an option.
If planting trees gets extra credit I should be set. Some of the twigs I pick up after a thunderstorm could count as firewood. Do regret it sometimes in the fall when I'm moving small mountains of leaves.
I've had turbos and NA and prefer NA. The lag can be a headache. I'm not terribly concerned about a turbo six. Just not enamored with the styling I'm seeing. If it was a four it would be a different story. I've had both FI and NA 4 cyl
Porsche
's before and don't want to go there again.
Just have to decide if I'm ready to give up my CS. Or add a bay to the garage. Price is a stretch now too.
This is all a conspiracy to make me drop my BMW lease and lock in a NA order on a Boxter
GTS
or a
911
Cabrio black edition. I'm sure of it. Yes.
I think the stars are aligning for me to buy a second
Porsche
....a 992.2. (The
next
model, not the facelifted 991.2 turbo.) I am guessing in about 6 years that car will be available. I am hoping that they will keep a 6MT NA
911
of some version available like the rumoured
911
GT. Otherwise....I will probably go aftermarket.
So you guys who are ordering the last
911
NAs, please drive safe and take care of my car.
This news has been hinted at for a long time. I suppose this change will be invisible to many
Porsche
buyers....but it certainly feels strange to me. Perhaps the car will grow on me and I'll get with the program....but right now I think I understand how the air cooled folks felt before the 996 was announced.
Simply put, I cannot see a reason that would make me want to upgrade to this car from my atmospheric 991.
This makes the most marketing sense of anything I have seen, though still disturbing. It puts 4's in the
981
so that they really do not compete with the 991's for driver passion, and it keeps 6's in the 991's, though with blowers. If they synthesize the sound properly, people will never miss NA. I have to say that I would be tempted to spend $20k more for a
911
, to stay with a flat 6(even with a turbo)
Porsche
. I simply will not own a 4 cylinder car...been there...done that. Might as well buy a MX-5. So they get people who really want to stay with
Porsche
to spend more for a
911
and the
Cayman
/
Boxster
is truly entry level, still at a premium price. Genius and they can blame it on the environmental standards!

The market is going towards turbo, electric, fuel efficiency, safety...little will stop this.
On the positive side
- tuning will yield big gains
- will get more gizmos (backup camera, safety devices)
On the negative side
- reliability will suffer over time
- used cars (say 7+ years old) will have more maintenance requirements / complexities. More plumbing, check valves, oiling needs
- Turbo driving is very different than NA driving experience, IMO in a negative way. Turbo is more fun in a straight line, NA is more fun in twisties. Hard to keep the turbos engaged.
- Cost will likely not decrease...but are you really getting more or less?
- I would have to believe that weight will go up or remain flat, harder to save weight
just my opinion...what do I know?
I actually owned a 66 Corsa-Turbo. Horrible lag, nothing at the low end. I put a double barrel side draft on it and ended up with 10 mpg, 14 gal tank as I remember. Ugh. I was rebuilding a 356 at the time and it is amazing how much GM copied
Porsche
in layout. Turbos are a lot different today.
Larry
fwiw: the following declaration came straight from a fellow who worked with my father at gm in the 1950s - 'gm consulted porsche on the original design of the corvair, and the only compensation porsche demanded from gm was an example of each factory-built model they elected to build.'
On these points
There are no US Macan turbo tuners yet I know of. Maybe in the works? There is Techart in Germany but it is not a rewrite but piggback. Plus the threat of DMCA violations hasn't gone away. There are no guarantees of big gains. I can also see EPA playing the emissions card. The whole point of the turbos is a smaller carbon footprint. Mess with the ECU and get slapped with a Clean Air Act violation.
Cost definitely going up at least from the options. Any performance oriented buyer isn't going to pass up on sport chrono plus to get the overboost (if I read the German right)
Weight is up. The German mentioned some number of KG. 30? I forget.
Here lays rest the

Beautiful Daughter of the VW beetle

Les, do you have the allocation locked up? Your dealer may be able to trade for an earlier allocation. If you can do
ED
that sometimes can help as the dealer gets a bonus allocation (which they can trade with another dealer).
There is a lot more info
here
Credit to them.
The sense I get from it is, of course faster, faster ring time than a GT4 (no surprise), sophisticated turbo. Not overboost but electric supercharger? No real explanation but more sophisticated than a 488? Bigger brakes, 4 modes in PDK.
Sound- not so good. 911R coming. Big dollars
AUSmotive.com » Is there a new Porsche 911 R coming?
If they somehow combine a supercharger with the turbos, then no lag might be possible.
No, allocation isn't locked. An order hasn't been placed. I think I'm currently in an inverted flat spin. The open question is do I just stay with my CS, take the car they found that is pretty much what I want though not sure about the interior color or C4S, or just order one. First allocation the dealer I was working with had is November. A ED is something I'd love to do though is impossible. It hasn't made sense to me to call around and try to find an earlier allocation until I figure out where I'm going.
Really hadn't planned on doing anything at this time. As more info comes out on the 991.2 it's tipping my hand a bit. Don't care for the styling I'm seeing and would prefer NA. If I was going to do a
911
turbo I'd want it to be the Turbo. Whatever, the world will go as it will. I don't think this is going to cause another bubble in cost though you never know. Waiting a couple years and looking for a clean 2015 to my specs might be the best route. Keep hearing no one will be able to drive a MT by then anyway so shouldn't have trouble with everyone wanting it?
Thanks, hopefully I figure out where I'm going before the spin becomes unrecoverable. Overall it seems like a good time to buy as
Porsche
is supposedly wanting to move sports cars.
How does that song go?
...the day, the NA muuuuuuusic, died...
Porsche
is really good at doling out tiny amounts of power in set increments aren't they? Add a turbo and only get 20HP in return? Oh, be still my beating heart!
Les,
Good luck. For many of us, it is a big decision. The fear of buyer's remorse kept me up at night.
That's the danger of being an early adopter, buyer's remorse and first gen bugs. I would lease before buying. If you end up with a lemon after three years it's
Porsche
's problem.
PAG has always done that. From 2006 to 2016, 11 years,
Cayman S
power has increased by 30HP. ~2.7HP per year. You can expect that then
next
10 years too. It's how they roll.
Or....... NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, HEY HEY HEY, GOOD BYE!
Thanks. It is a big decision. Not exactly keeping me up but the fear of not moving now is certainly keeping my attention. I wonder if there's a not buying remorse?
While leasing is an option under consideration it's not for being an early adopter but getting a car I'd intended to early to avoid adopting at all. Just not feeling it for what I'm seeing of the 991.2.
I seem to recall predictions of the 911 death knell before... 928, anyone?
John
Panorama says that it is official.
I guess you never heard a
Porsche
917/30 CAN-AM???
A turbo/four doesn't bother me a bit. I'm anxious to see it.
Müller says that the base will be 2.0 liters and the S will be 2.5 liters . . . and later we might expect a 395 hp engine.
Number electronic steering, no manual transmission for the Turbo/GT3 variants, now Turbo engines that will probably sound like the 997 Turbo (sucking air). Great. I guess we're making BMW's now.
Ya know...Not only do we not know if it's really true. We don't know the '16 specs and we don't know how good this thing will be. The new car could very well be so much better than the NA car that we'll forget about them in 2 years. "Yeah, remember when we were all so worried that turbos were coming to
911
's?"
If you want to bet against
Porsche
and speculate that the new cars will be packed with less goodness than the old, go ahead. I'm not so sure.
Also not so in love with 991s. They feel huge to me.
Y'all have fun!
Chow I'm sorry I'm such a cynic when it comes to Muller, a few years back when the possibility of a
GT4
was being discussed by Andreas Preuninger, Mr. Muller gave some of the most absurd misinformation, I'm too lazy today to search through my old posts, but I'll tell you this, most people (including car mags) swore up and down the new unnamed GT(X)
Cayman
was definitely a Flat Four with a Turbo.......just sayin'........ I'm of the mind that with
Porsche
, until you see the official presser, with Muller in his Armani suit waving to the crowd, you can't be certain. At least not 100%.
Wait, this is the
911
thread. This is a done deal. Its everywhere. You will see small displacement flat 6 turbos. This is not the
981
thread.
