So, I'm helping my boss get his first Porsche. He's narrowed his search down to Carmine Red Targa 4 GTS or Carmine Red 911 GTS Cab. Luckily for him there's one of each at local dealers. I have no idea what type of discount can be expected. I'm assuming not much on the Targa and nothing close to the discount I got on my Cayman S.
Anyone want to chime in?
Also, I told him if he truly wants this color it might be tough unless he orders and if they have allocation. I told him to jump on one of these as quick as possible.
Both are fine cars, beautiful, powerkit cars. Both will be slower than the equivalent coupes.
Love the Targa, just slower. Some people worry about the complexity of the mechanics and how much to repair out of warranty. IMO, not an issue. Targa might get less a discount, Cabrio probably easier to get a discount.
Carmine is not a problem at all. Its the standard GTS color across all the models. It just cost more, that's all. The dealer has them because the car is advertised in that color, just like you see many 981GTS or Cayenne GTS cars in Carmine.
With 991.2 announcement in Frankfurt, MY16 cars will be the last of the NA breed. They are desirable and I think prized, as the turbos proliferate, among the people heavy into the brand,
Good luck. Lucky guy. Personally, I'd take the Targa. At that price point, nobody cares about how fast the cars are. If they want to go faster, they buy a TT Cabrio.
Have to say I like the new targa, it's a classic look. Had the opportunity to drive one on the PCNA Atlanta test track- very nice car. Would be my pick for a grand touring Porsche.
Thanks for the help. I'll definitely pass along the info.
We went to go see the Cab unit and it was sweet. The CR with black wheels, top and bits just went so well together. The SA let us start it up and he instructed us to give it some hard sharp revs with the PSE on. My boss was blown away with the exhaust note. I was too. I know we were in a parking structure but it was pretty loud and mean.
Actually, the Targa unit is listed as a MY16. Originally, I was thinking he'd need to make a decision now on a MY15 since I was expecting MY16 as being the turbo 6.
Yeah, he doesn't care what about the different in speed. He's just trying to figure out Targa or Cab.
GT type car fits him to a T. Can't go wrong either way in my opinion.
I got to drive the Targa 4S at PWRS and the power/torque was impressive. I know he'll love it.
Originally, he had an ED order on a 4S Cab when I ordered my car but due to the dealership dropping the ball and the date getting pushed into almost winter time, he cancelled his order out of frustration.
Porsche makes all kinds of stunning-looking vehicles. The 911 Cab,
any
911 Cab - especially with the top down - isn't one of them IMO. The 991 Cab has a bit more fluid lines than previous versions, but parked next to a Coupe a Cab just isn't as sexy. The new Targa is a bit gimmicky, but looks pretty good. I vote for the Targa.
Interesting you bring that up, there was a GTS Coupe next to the GTS Cab and he was noticing the green house lines of the coupe accentuate the wide butt. Only problem, he's set on Cab or Targa.
I have a 991 coupe but would pick the Targa over the Cab - it just looks better to me.
Ultimately, your boss has to decide.
But if it is his money....100% 911 Targa!
Very unique, looks great (got to see one in person a while back)
More for showing off than fastest lap time...nothing wrong with that!
Take a look at this month's Excellence magazine. It features a section on all the GTS models.
I chose the cab and did ED last month. I am in love. I drive top down as much as possible. I tested both and the Targa was a bit more noisy than the cab, even more so with wind-break deployed in the cab. I would suggest your boss drive both. It very personal and I don't think there any right or wrong answers. If it is all about looks for him, I agree the coupe is best looking
to me
. If you want to help, make all the arrangements and have the cars ready for him to test drive back to back.
Check out
my ED experiance
here.
Yup, that's exactly what I did for him on his recent MB S550 purchase. Found the unit, set-up test drives, spell out all the features/options, all the price negotiations, paper work emailed prior to hand-over, etc. All he had to do was basically go there with his check and pick-up the car. Major hang-up for him was when the finance guy held him hostage for over an hour by trying to sell him all the prepaid maintenance plans, on the verge of walking out since the guy couldn't take no for answer. That was the sore spot. Other than that, easy breezy for him.
Nice ED write-up. That's what he had originally planned last year with his ordered unit but to make a long story short, he missed his window as the ED date had potential weather issues so late into the year. Resulted in a cancelled order.
He's getting antsy and confused. Called me up earlier today, "I should just go right now and buy the Carmine Red GTS Cab, right?" Just now, I came down from his office, "I think I want the Targa GTS."
Oh boy...haha!
Check out the blind spots, roof up: I don't know about the 991, but the Boxster has terrible blind spots, the 914 Targa has no blind spots.
TARGA!!!! It's my favorite 911. I think it looks even better than the coupe.
I'd choose the Targa, hands down, simply for its more rare and unique.
I've seen the Targa in both white and CR. OMG, I'd pick the gorgeous white in a heart beat... and this is coming from one who doesn't favor whites. The silver line on white made it very grand.
The cabriolet would require a ducktail IMO to pull it off with its long tub. And still won't look as unique as the Targa.
However, the other day in a club event one guy said that after long years of moving from a Targa to another, he gave up. He complained from the rattle the roof develops over time and never goes away.
Or perhaps he has a great relationship with his boss and these type of gestures helps him progress in his personal career
While I agree it seems a bit clerical to be doing these type of things, if it is a company with less than 100 people you definitely have a different kind of relationship with your boss and these type of things go a long way.
Not sure how you were able to ascertain all those other qualities about the man from this thread.
OK, If he were my boss, he'd probably end up with a nice Can Am Limited Edition Targa 914 (because I want one of those). This is why he's your (OP's) boss and not mine.
Nobody knows your personal situation, but it is bizarre decorum to take your direct report shopping for your Porsche! Now if he is really generous and showers you with raises, money, etc, that's cool. If you are not getting overpaid, it is extremely obnoxious and the demonstration of an amateur egocentric horse's posterior. I hope you are happily overpaid.
that being said, the Targa has a significant coolness factor and a much rarer car. It also looks better as most people think the cab is out of balance with the fat a@@. But like everything related to Porsche choices, it is really up to him. convertible vs hardtop is like saying tastes great or less filling.
If it's a small company or if he's close with his boss, I don't see this odd at all.
It's like being friends with a colleague.
PS Pjunk, post a picture of your boss please for me to overrule it's not a blond 20 something she
Only thing I've gathered from reading this thread is that altruism doesn't rank very high in the mind of Americans (evidently)
. Why does everything have to have an ulterior motive.... maybe OP is just a "car geek" (no offense meant), the boss knows this and sees this as something to bond together about, other than work?
Only thing I find wrong with this thread is that there are NO PICS of the cars mentioned, as a fellow "car geek" I would have appreciated that.
if your boss is cheap and underpaying you, and then takes you shopping for his new Porsche, you think that is a sign that altruism is dead in America? Rather, it is called "Americans don't like douche bags."
I'm not sure how many of you are reading all of these attributes into this thread. I've helped many people with car purchases over the years, some were bosses, some were clericals - what difference does it make what the position is? Most people, if they want help, will go to someone who might have a little more knowledge about the issue than they do. If I were buying a Ferrari, for instance, and one of my employees owned one - why wouldn't I want to ask him for help? So the boss wanted help and went to a current Porsche owner, does that make him a bad guy? Lighten up - I wish I had bosses in my time who wanted to drive Porsches. Good luck with the purchase and enjoy your relationship with the boss.
My 2c:
If the OP is doing this for no pay, then great, sounds like fun.
If the OP is being paid for his Porsche-shopping time and:
1. This is a privately-owned (by the boss) company or the boss is a private individual, then great, sounds like fun.
2. This is a publicly-owned company, then the BOD may frown on use of company funds for the boss' personal business.
3. If OP Porsche-shopping hours are being charged directly to customers or clients, then: really bad idea.
This is the most derailed thread of all time
The OP was sharing his joy to shop for a Porsche.
Few members jumped to advise
Few members jumped kidding
And the thread now is heading with the quoted message above to Ernst & Young for auditing :hilarious:
its fun shopping for cars
I like the new targa mechanism - definitely eye catching at the lights!
The targa is cool but i don't know if it's so cool that it beats the faster mechanism of the conv. or having more of the top down. Definitely needs the test drives.

Wow! This thread has taken an odd turn, so off topic. I'm not going to get into it too much but I will say my boss is in his early 60s and is the sole owner of our small company and we don't bill our clients in the fashion as one of the posters eluded to. Again, great guy.
As KRG mentioned, he was truly happy that I got my Porsche.
I'm curious to get his reaction after seeing the Targa GTS this weekend. Well, that was his plan but I'm off this entire week so I'll have yet to talk to him. I'll have to give him a call this week to hear what he has to say.
I did drop by my dealership for an oil change over the weekend. Spoke to them about my boss wanting a GTS. They have a Agate with red leather interior GTS Cab they are trying to unload with at a nice discount, immediately came out with 9%. I'm sure there's more to be had since he said he's motivated and that they've had it for awhile. But, major problem is the color since he really liking the Carmine Red.
OK, for the record, my post #29 was intended to say pretty much the same thing as Hassaan's post #25 except with more elaboration (I'm a retired Program Manager so am used to worrying about this stuff). My going-in assumption, BTW, was that you are not billing any clients or anything and so this sounds like a really kick-*** job to me. Please continue to post progress.
Thanks,
well i like the OP.
anyway - he is pretty young and can afford a nice car - i'd say he is doing quite well.
you have PM OP.
When threads turn to the topic of work people don't half get worked up. And I will be the voice of dissent and vote for the Cab. The Targa is lovely in a Porsche geeky way but I think the Cab would be easier to live with especially if you would like to get people in the back (with the roof down).
Yesterday I got back into the office after being off last week and the owner calls me up to fill me in on pressing matters. Of course, one of them being his Porsche purchase. He's firm on the Targa GTS. The local Carmine Red unit for sale isn't actually for sale. There was a miscommunication at the dealership and the SA was offering a unit that was already spoken for. I got in touch with my dealership that I purchased my CS from and they tell me all their allocations are spoken for and that there are less Targa GTS coming to the states than the GT3RS. Not sure how accurate that is but he did mention less than 150 units. Anyways, chances looked very slim but this morning another dealership contacted me stating they got an allocation this morning and it's my boss' if he wants it. So, he took it. Oct build with Nov delivery.
Is he missing anything? Here's his build:
Porsche Car Configurator
That's odd. It wouldn't let me edit the previous post.
Here's his build:
The Porsche Code
Wow, That stripped turbo money. Yeah, he missed buying a Turbo
Since you asked
$0 deletion of GTS Designator on door. Why? Cause its already all over the place inside and on the butt. Wouldn't he know its a GTS when he see the butt, doorsill, etc?
$3160 PDDC - If he wants a performance build
$0 Smoking package- otherwise there is an ugly hole
$0 Luggage Net in Passenger Footwell (convenient)
XM radio?
The one car I've driven with PDCC might have had an issue so grain of salt. PDCC came off just slightly artificial. You'd go into a turn and just as the car would seem like it had finished rolling and was going to take its set it would stop and flatten out just a little. Wasn't anything like uncontrollable or a lot of roll. Just a touch artificial. If it does that on the limit I could see it confusing the hints the car would normally give you about being ready to lose it.
If given the choice I'm not sure I'd do both SPASM and PDCC or just SPASM.
Thanks Grey! I read your comments in that thread as well.
