Just to add my neighbour has a 997T coupe and I a 996T X50 cab so we have experience of differences, both are auto ( I have fitted paddle shift to mine)

So much so that I have now swapped my 996T seats for 997 Sports seats - much better driving position (a little bit lower) and much more comfy
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Nice find, nice read.. If you get the chance, try either at least once, they're holding value pretty well so if you find a good one you can pop in/out without to much of a hit !
My old 996 Turbo was a great car, loved everything about it, when tuned was an animal. They're a real bargain at the moment.
I love my 997 Turbo ever so slightly more, but have to pay for that pleasure !
Good summary in my view. Just to add my neighbour has a 997T coupe and I a 996T X50 cab so we have experience of differences, both are auto ( I have fitted paddle shift to mine)
One other thing should be noted, tax on the 997 is almost double the 996. We both insure with same company and mine is about 2/3 cost of his to insure. In addition he has to have a tracker fitted. His car is about 18 months newer than mine
Not a big deal really but something you might want to consider, we are both near the same age and driving experience so not based on youth verses old codger ( were both in the old codger category 😂)
cheers for posting this great read! I just got my 996tt and I must disagree with him on it's ability over speed bumps its a bit bone crushing and ive heard the splitter grazing the ground a few times now.I'm using it as a daily in london the speed bumps and 20 mph zones are a bit of a pain but it's great otherwise (even fits all the shopping)
Great article, thanks.
I'm looking (very theoretically) at some 996 Turbo X50 cabs at the moment. I think it's the only car I would be tempted to upgrade from my C4S cab (which is already difficult to fault).
Nice to hear people using their Turbos as dailys - what amazing cars they are.
996T v 997T
As it's relevant to the thread title I've dug out a post that I wrote in 2015 when, for a short while, I was lucky enough to own both cars.
For the exterior looks I prefer the 997 turbo, even though it verges on being a little fussy, especially the area around the front fog lights. I prefer my 996 for the drive. It feels more connected to the road and what's happening around me, the 997 is better insulated. Also I find the 997.1 interior is rather dated, with flaking "soft touch" material, more so than the 996. The 997tt with the .2 interior in manual would be my choice, but they're thin on the ground, plus they were another 20-25K more at the time had a significant bearing on my choice.
ive only had my 996T for a few weeks so still getting used to it. I've not driven a 997T but have owned a 987 for the past few years so whilst i can't comment on the driving differences I did notice two immediate differences in the interior.
1) The seats - both my cars have sports seats and the 987s are so much more comfy. So much so that I have now swapped my 996T seats for 997 Sports seats - much better driving position (a little bit lower) and much more comfy
2) The door card elbow rest - this is going to sound like the height of 1st world problems but on the long drive back from picking up my 996T i noticed the door card elbow rest has zero padding. It is basically a hard piece of plastic with a thin leather cover. So not comfy at all for the bony bit of the elbow. By contract the 9*7 elbow rest has a thin layer of padding which does make a difference to the comfort levels. Having said that, i'm sure i'll get used to the hardship! And had i not spent 2 years in a 9*7 interior, i'm sure I wouldn't have even noticed!
The main reason I went 996T over 997T was price - i just couldn't justify the extra ~£15k to move up.
Why are you limiting yourself to X50 cars? My understanding is that the upgrade over standard isn't huge and in some cases is actually worse than standard (e.g. the K24 turbo not being as responsive as the K16)?
I'd guess because there are not so many of them and that drives desirability over the stock turbo. Remember too that the X50 was a £8k factory option that had larger K24 turbos and different intercoolers that drove a chunk of that option cost.
As for your understanding about K24 turbo not being as responsive over the K16, you should drive each side by side. The K24 is remarkaby responsive and boosts to 1.0/1.1 bar versus stock K16 to 0.7/0.8 and has a different map that takes it to 450bhp versus 420 and different torque curve.
Stock turbo can be chipped for much more power and torque than X50 without paying £8k. But then it is just a chipped/modified turbo and not an X50.
