Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I checked the LN Engineering registry using the VIN.
Leading evidence: 'Check ln engineering registry' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check ln engineering registry' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If they actually put in an LN Engineering bearing, you can check the LN registry, but whatever they put in there needs to be replaced with LN Engineering retrofit or solution because it is past replacement time.

Also, if you don't know when the last oil change was done, I would recommend an immediate oil change with a short change interval at 1000 miles or 3 months for the first change.

I would also replace your AOS as well with the UAOS w/ Track drain then you have a complete refresh and no worries with it failing and creating intermix, smoking and ruining your cats, oil consumption, hydralock amd cracking your cylinders, parking on a hill or overfilling your oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am so excited about this car. Feels too good to be true.
I have a deposit down on this 996 in NJ (links below). I am local. Test drove the car last week and having a PPI done tomorrow morning. If all looks good, I will be purchasing.
Plan on driving the car on longer road trips this summer and want to spend some money now for peace of mind as a new owner. I want to invest the time/money now to prevent headaches in the long run.
Some questions for the group:
What work needs to be done ASAP to keep me safe for these road trips?
IMS bearing was alledgedly replaced in 2013 @ 30k miles. Its at 41k miles today.
Car pretty decent service history albeit there are some gaps in the timeline. Still above average from what ive seen.
Has anyone else looked at this particular car and passed? It was auctioned on BaT but didnt hit the reserve, back in Feb 25. Its been on the lot for a few months.
Interior/exterior are gorgeous. Cold start sounded fine. No odd sounds. Drives really nicely, but I dont have much to compare to. This would be my first 996.
Has anyone dealt with this seller before? My experience has been fine, but limited so far.

IMS bearing needs to be replaced. If they actually put in an LN Engineering bearing, you can check the LN registry, but whatever they put in there needs to be replaced with LN Engineering retrofit or solution because it is past replacement time. The description says the IMS bearing is done which is meant to get you to think it doesn't ever need to be worried about ever again, but it only bought this car some time. You will do a clutch and go get UAOS while you have the access and replace the bearing. It will add about $5K to the cost of this car.
^^^THIS.
Make sure replace your water pump as well.
IMSB, UAOS and water pump will address the major issues that are very easily preventable. Might as well do it up front at the beginning of ownership. Good luck with the PPI results.
The 996 is an awesome car.
Welcome to 996 madness! It looks like a really nice car. You will like the 996 so much that you will want to drive it daily. I totally agree with what everyone is saying. The big issue you have is the low mileage. It's a blessing and a curse. Especially for the engine. Please take care of the IMSB immediately. LN Engineering, either version. There will be some that will argue against doing the AOS, but here is where age and low miles create an unknown. The best insurance it to get it replaced. When the AOS fails, it can create hydrolock and destroy your engine. Glenn lists the UAOS as a replacement, which is from another forum member, Skip. Also, if you don't know when the last oil change was done, I would recommend an immediate oil change with a short change interval at 1000 miles or 3 months for the first change. Driven DI40. The BAT listing said the tires are 15 years old. Michelin PS4S. Good luck with the PPI. These are smile machines and very reliable when all the old issues have been updated.
Relax and drive it. Get to know and love it. Get an OBD2 reader to determine if a CEL is a nightmare or a no-big-thing event. Don't be afraid to drive it, while paying close attention to any warning signs.
I am still waiting on the written report, with photos, from Rennsport of Hackensack. Sal there seems like a real good guy.
Verbal results are as follows (only reporting the bad):
a few spots of oil on engine just below the rear main seal (where engine and transmission meet)
This is the most concerning thing to me, but hard to imagine there are zero oil leaks on this car, especially as its only been driven 10k miles in the last 13 years. Could be a lot of different things, but the amount of oil there (after sitting in Sals shop all day) did not concern him. No drips onto the floor. Will send pictures.
Coolant freezing point far too high. Needs to be flushed.
Tires are bad. I knew this. Good opportunity to buy fresh rubber (PS4S??)
Needs a new battery.
Shocks/struts are original and could use a refresh.
Seems like Im okay to proceed? Thoughts?
oh oh oh, the one key thing you need to learn is where the emergency release cables for the hood and trunk are, make sure they work, and make sure you learn how to use them... and fill your spare tire.
First stop from the dealer. NJ Taylor ham and egg. Eaten in the car, with precaution.

I love the car and am going to daily drive it. I can be a bit obsessive, so I decided to do a post-purchase inspection with a more trusted shop (Meccanic Shop, North Salem, NY aka 1600 Veloce seller on BaT). Lorenzo is awesome. Here are the results that matter.
-Clutch doesn't feel great, gas pedal noise/binding, oil leak at bell housing, tires are cooked.
So... I'm jumping on the opportunity for a new clutch to do some other stuff:
Brand new Michelin PS4S
Transmission, brake, power steering service and flush
Replace thermostat, water pump, belt, tensioner, and idler.
Replace clutch, IMS retrofit, RMS, flywheel. IMS bearing to be registered/sent back to LN properly.
Oil change
Add Bluetooth module to existing stereo so I can listen to my jams
Should be up and running by next weekend. I can't wait to feel the difference this all makes!
I would also replace your AOS as well with the UAOS w/ Track drain then you have a complete refresh and no worries with it failing and creating intermix, smoking and ruining your cats, oil consumption, hydralock amd cracking your cylinders, parking on a hill or overfilling your oil. You will sleep well.
You are doing the right thing and all the things that many of us have done. GC996 is right, if you have more room on your credit card, you are going to be glad you got the UAOS installed. Here is the link:
The 996/997 Ultimate AOS UAOS-AL Complete Kit
A lot of us have got it with the track drain option and that way you don't have to worry about overfilling it. You are flushing all the old fluids so don't forget the coolant.
These things you are doing won't change the performance, but you will feel better driving around without the worry.
If you don't mind my saying, the coil packs crack in old age and you will first notice the problem, if there is one, after it rains. The other thing to be windful of is the insane number of rubber coolant carrying hoses and pull over if you see steam coming out the back!
Insane amount of fun for you this summer!
