Suggestion
You can check if you are getting 12V when the brake pedal is pushed, and you can also check ground continuity from the light to the chassis..

Suggestion
All the bulbs share the same ground in the car body wiring so if tge turn signal and reverse light work ok I would be carefully checking the harness on the tail light.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.
Hi all from Dublin Ireland
i have my 2002 996 C4 over 14 years now ...
I'm having a strange issue with the rear lights on my 2002 Porsche 996. When I press the brake pedal, the
tail light on the driver’s side
actually
turns off
, and the
brake (stop) light doesn’t come on at all
.
This problem is only happening on one side — the other side works as expected.
It seems like the light is losing power or grounding incorrectly when the brake is applied.
ive replaced the bulb but same issue and i have cleaned the connectors
appreciate any input from anyone who’s seen this before.
Thanks in advance!
How deteriorated was the wiring? It might be your brake light switch, located under the dash where the brake pedal is. This is where a multimeter would come in handy. You can check if you are getting 12V when the brake pedal is pushed, and you can also check ground continuity from the light to the chassis..
Like you mentioned it's a bad ground somewhere. All the bulbs share the same ground in the car body wiring so if tge turn signal and reverse light work ok I would be carefully checking the harness on the tail light.
Also if there are LED retrofit bulbs all bets are off. Those can cause some very odd things.
