The 991 got me back into a 911. The previous best Porsche I ever owned, th Boxter S RS-60, is now in the fond memory box along with the ol 911 SC, the 911, and the 914. Its a Carrera S with PDK, Sport Chrono, PASM Sport + (a bit lower, stiffer, front spoiler lip and several rear spoiler positions), full leather, sun roof, and the usual other bells and lights.
PSE on another car nearly got me, but the suspension on this one is sufficiently old school that the car comes alive with no dull anything in the twisties at interesting speeds. I can pretend to be grown up because it just sounds amazing instead of like its leading a pack of angry DE participants.
So far just 150 miles old, but I can tell it has tri-polar disorder. It is a grand tourer on the highway, an economy car wannabe self selecting higher gears that I once thought disastrous to piddle around in and playing dead at stoplights, and, in Sport +, OMG ... etc, etc.
now if i can figure out how to change the profile pic ...
Congrats. Nice upgrade. Post pics when you have a chance
Congrats. From what I've seen in person and read, the new 991S is the best 911. Will be interested in your driving reports, especially in comparison to your Boxster.
Enjoy your new 991 awesome ride! remember the saying were not here for a long time but were here for a good time. Waiting for your review.
Did he ever return? Yes, he always returned,
And his fate is not unlearn'd:
His Porsh drives forever on the roads of Bowie:
He's the man who always returned.
Wow! You must be as old as me. That melody still rings in my head.
Report #1. After piddling around in traffic all week the 991 got its legs stretched today- 350 mi round trip mostly on the Interstate. Compared to the Boxter S it is a limo. It drives much bigger than it is. Despite the PASM Sport package (shorter springs and stiffer sway bars), the longer wheelbase and new suspension is way more supple, even with the PDK in Sport +. It is quiet at absurd speeds in 7th. 2000 RPM= 75 mph, and the numbers get big fast every 500 rpm or so. The interior is a definite improvement from me- roomier and more functional- the rising consul is narrower at the knee that in the Boxter. It "just works", so complaints that it is too luxorious are overrun by its functionality. The electric steering rack provides plenty of feedback. All that stuff will be on new Boxter/Cayman and they will be + 1 over older models. Going through the tunnel at Baltimore in light traffic this am,
It is definitely a 911- no more "rotate by thinking"- you have to steer! No rising and falling movements accelerating or braking hard. Almost boring, unless attacking with some throttle- then Shazam- 911 sublime. The most obvious difference from the Boxter S is the huge difference in torque. Even in 7th, if you wiggle a toe it is at 85 in a couple of seconds without down shifting; step on it and it drops down a few gears and you have to back off from the other side of 100 and headed toward too big a ticket. More when I get out in the country north of DC to actually try the suspension!
Finally, for the who-in- the-world needs that crowd, are the heated steering wheel and wave of hand hood opener, both on the car as it came. I will never own another car without a heated steering wheel. Settle in on the highway, turn on the seat heat and the wheel heat and blow in some cool air and its better than sitting at a campfire with a cup of hot chocolate.:burnout:
OOPS meant to say: going through the Baltimore tunnel is less melodious that the PSE Boxter S- no banshee wail. I will miss that. It has a very serious deep guttural bark at high rpms, perhaps like all the new high pressure engines. The car I got did not have PSE. One that I tested did and I have to admit that if I was ordering one I would be tempted- it is a symphony level Porsche soundtrack - like my old SC at DE with open tapered pipes.
Welcome. Once I am done with my 997.2, will join you in a couple of years! Nice color combo.
good choice..enjoy!! might be ordering one soon, but still hoping the current Turbo S will go down in pricing..lol
Great post! I enjoyed reading your comments. I will be driving the new Carrera S in a couple of weeks. Very excited to have the opportunity to experience first hand! Drive safe and have fun!!!
Thanks guys. Some More impressions:
Weather here near DC has been spring like and I've been commuting to work- 20 miles or so, along a combination of the worst ring road in the world (i495) and a really nice twisty park like 2 lane country road along the Potomac.
On the crowded interstate, the only is entertainment is playing, I'm a Prius. The PDK seeks 7th, the revs falls to 500 rpm off throttle (aka "sailing" ) or watching the speed creep up to too fast.
On the other hand, the GW Parkway with "Sport" engaged is a ride in the country with too many companions. Basically a great commuter car.
On the third hand, on the windy hilly extension up the Maryland side, Jaykill becomes Hyde and I have to laugh at how slow some of the the reviewers must have been going if they thought the car was less involving than its predecessors. One G (indicated) is easily surpassed well within the limits with precise placement and excellent feedback at the wheel and seat. It eats up more road more smoothly. I can see why the track testers have raved about it. May have to get back to a DE or Friday at the Track.
