I have resorted to using the spare key which looks the same, except has the Porsche logo in monochrome, rather than colour and there are some codes printed on to the key.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I replaced the battery in the key of the 996.1 c2 but now it does not open or close the car.
The LED flashes when pressed but it does not do anything.
Any thoughts appreciated.

I wrote a big long post but anyway, don't bother with the mail order repairers unless you have your key code for reprogramming. :thumb:
Couple of things you can try here in GT4s post -

This worked for me........
Locked & unlocked the car using the key in the lock
Popped the key into the ignition, turned the key so the ignition lights came on
Then pressed the 'frunk" button & held it for 5 seconds ......I also believe the same works for the lock/ unlock button too
All sorted. I hope the above works for your 996
Let me know how you get on

Hi All OP here,
Well I tried everything and no luck.
I have resorted to using the spare key which looks the same, except has the Porsche logo in monochrome, rather than colour and there are some codes printed on to the key.
I'm guessing it is OK to use right?
What is the best way to get a new key? Can newer style keys be programmed to work on the 996?

Bit of an odd experience of this in my case. My main key which id used for 2 years suddenly stopped working on the buttons. I replaced the battery and tried every "reprogram" guide I could find. Still no luck.
Fortunately my spare key worked fine, so ive been using that for the last 3 years instead. Then last week I stumbled across the original key again which had been sitting in a drawer since it stopped working 3 years ago. I tried it again on the car and it now works perfectly. Go figure!
The relationship between the M535 CU/immobiliser module under the seat, its associated aerial and the key head/s is a complex and fragile one. Codes exchanged, accepted, or rejected, hopefully permissions given for opening, shutting off the alarm, etc. Also the CU module only has a finite number of codes (i.e., keys) that can ever be entered and requires specialist software for pairing. While the remote entry issues can be the key functionality, it also can be the CU, or on rare occasions its aerial connection or the small fuse on the front of the CU.
As mentioned, even with the OPC, I tried every trick even tried to get a new key to marry to the existing CU. No go. It need both a new key and a new CU. I am now getting a second new key programmed, for extra assurance. An old key 'waking up' is interesting but could be a key function or a CU memory function.
I am a 'one trial learner' on these but this seems a weak point on these older cars.
