Suggestion · Original poster

I was supposed to have the car by now but alas some remedial work + holidays has set us back 2 weeks which has given me plenty of time to pour over all the pictures again and again and compare everything to other cars I've seen (probably driving myself crazy in the process).

Its actually quite tricky getting the brackets in the correct position and if it isn't and the screws for the lights are tightened then CRACK!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again for everyone's help so far. I was supposed to have the car by now but alas some remedial work + holidays has set us back 2 weeks which has given me plenty of time to pour over all the pictures again and again and compare everything to other cars I've seen (probably driving myself crazy in the process). The seller made me aware of the front bumper droop and told me it will be fixed but I've since noticed the rear left seems to droop below the light much more than the right. I'm wondering if this is a big issue (e.g. evidence of accident damage) or just something that happens with these and can be fixed. for reference its a 996t. Some pics attached.

POST 2Original post

I suppose it could be accident damage, but TBH I've never seen a 996 with absolutely 100% perfect fitment. If the paint is OK, I would not worry about this. Adjusting the bumpers is not very easy either, so it could be these have just been taken off at some point and reinstalled without thinking about it twice.

POST 3Original post

Fairly common, I've had to adjust the bumpers on just about all of my P cars. I was out the other day doing the front bumper on a newly acquired 996 and bought new fasteners to do the job. Nice and straight now. It might be that it's been off (again a common occurrence) and hasn't been put back open properly. Could be crash damage, but you can easily tell on these cars if there has been damage.

POST 4Original post

I wouldn't worry too much. It's so negligible, that it should be possible to adjust it out. All my older Beemers had some kind of adjustment to level up.

POST 5Original post

Unless there's other signs of accident damage it's definitely not a deal breaker. The bumpers (especially the front ones) of these cars are taken off with such regularity that after 15 years+ all of the mounting brackets etc are bound to be a bit secondhand. Getting a car 'right' after purchase is all part of the experience.

POST 6Original post

As above with any luck. A lot of people are proud of how quickly they can do jobs on the 996, but it takes time to get things right. I imagine this has had both ends removed for access and put back to meet a target time, rather than impress the owner. With a bit of jiggery pokery I'm sure it'll improve. Check for any parts of either bumper cover moving or flapping though, due to broken clips or mountings. That could quickly become a pain.

POST 7Original post

The rear bumper fits into slots in the body work under each tail light so its height is fixed. You adjust the bracket the tail lights mount to to get the spacing between the bumper and lights correct. Then also adjust the engine cover latch and rubber buffers to get the engine cover correct. In your pics it looks like a bit of tweaking would get it perfect but as others have said most are like yours. The front bumper looks like it wasn't pushed all the way home before its screws were tightened, again no biggy. Not saying there's no accident damage underneath, but what you've noticed is very common. Ps the bracket for the rear lights being badly adjusted is the reason a lot of cars have cracked mounting points on the rear clusters. Its actually quite tricky getting the brackets in the correct position and if it isn't and the screws for the lights are tightened then CRACK!

POST 8Original post

As mentioned above. The bumper slides into a slot below the headlight so the top is more or less fixed as long as it's pushed into those slots. Looks like the taillights are misaligned making the bumper look out. Bottom edge of the right taillight is definitely lower than the right and the edge of the engine cover. I wouldn't assume accident damage, I'd just assume parts have been on and off for other things or have just moved a little over time. Its not a big worry. The bumper skins themselves are extremely flimsy and flexible when off the car and are only held by screws through speed nuts along the edges. These rust over time so not uncommon to see a bottom lip or edge that's a bit loose or sticking out slightly. All easily fixed and aligned with a bit of patience.

POST 9Original post

It doesn't look that bad..these cars are getting a good age now!!
