Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any one who has removed the cams from a 996 I'd like your advise please... I will set the crank shaft at TDC Then I will remove the camshaft plugs and observe where the notches are in the butt of the cams... They should be up on the right side head and down on the left side head Right ? If they are opposite then I will rotate the crankshaft over 360 degrees right ? Once the engine is lined up correctly I will install a cam retaining plate and then remove the valve cover Right ? The I will take pictures with my camera so that I will remember the exact cam positions Also I will mark chain and sprocket positions and zip tie the chains to the gears Then I will loosen the chain tensioner but not take it all the way out Right ? Lastly I will loosen the cam drive gear and remove the cam retaining plate, then lift out the cams as a pair with the solenoid Right ? any tips or sage advise appreciated this is my first water cooled 911

POST 2Original post

The position and configuration of the cam notches varies with the vintage of the engine (3 chain vs. 5 chain), as with one design, there are only notches in one of the cams. Do a search, RennTech and other sites have posted "how to's" with photos on this procedure, including some ideas on how to fabricate the holding tools if you do not own a set of the OEM units.

POST 3Original post

Lock the crank also with the pin through the crank pulley, it'll want to turn when you're messing with the chains /tensioners, if you don't have the pun you can grind round a1/4"extension..... this is vital to properly time the cams when reinstalling
