I just fitted my existing OBC stalk to the new one, saving about £70 and the whole job took less that an hour to do, quite an easy fix.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have seen this seems to be a fairly common problem. My indicator does not cancel on left turn and will not stay on turning right on my 2001 996 3.6. I have found a few different column stalks but I could do with knowing if the indicator stalk can just be replaced or will I need to find the exact complete unit for my car, which is; indicator, wipers with headlight washer and computer stalk. I have seen the Youtube video but before I tackle this issue I would like to get a bit more info to see if I can get any compatible indicator stalk to fit my existing column unit. Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Had the exact same problem with my indicator stalk only a month ago (infact as I write this I am looking at the old one next to me). I ended up getting the exact same one from LA Porsche Dismantlers out of the States. The process to replace was very straight forward and my mechanic used the YouTube Video... the only thing he differently was ensure the key was completely out of the ignition and the battery disconnected for 10 minutes or so before starting.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll make a note of the key out and battery off tip. I would like to try to retro fit a new indicator stalk as I would like know if it can just be replaced as this will come in handy if anyone else has the same problem. I have not seen it done on any other forums yet and I would just like to know if it can be done. Any other tips will be appreciated. Is the Boxster cluster the same? Is there a part number that can be matched?

POST 4Original post

Looking at the one I took out (photo's attached), I don't think it is possible to retrofit just the stalk. It appears to me that the entire mechanism (bar the OBC stalk) is designed as a single unit fit. Furthermore the assembly appears fastened across the face by some type of double-sided rivets (not screwed). If it was me I would probably try and get a second hand one. The one I picked up was about 1/4 of the price of a new unit and that included freighting it from the US to New Zealand. My plan when I get a few spare moments is to disassemble the old unit (drill out the rivets), and try and find the broken bit and see if it's possible to get it repaired... perhaps plastic welded or similar. Should be a bit of a fun exercise c: The part for my car (2001 996 Turbo) was 996 613 219 10 EWC. Cheers Kiwi

POST 5Original post

The stalks come in 4 basic flavours: 1) 2 lever stalk. The levers are integral to the central switching unit and cannot be removed individually 2) 3 lever stalk with OBC. This has the additional stalk for the OBC screwed onto the left side. 3) 3 lever stalk with cruise. This has the cruise lever on the right hand side, and the lever is integral to the to the central switching unit and cannot be rmoved. 4) 4-lever stalk. The same as 3) but with the OBC stalk screwed to the left side. The 4-lever stalk is cheaper than the 3-lever, for some strange reason, so if you need a 3-lever, buy the 4-lever, and cut the cruise lever off. (Or retrofit cruise control perhaps). Alternatively, buy a 2-lever stalk and swap the OBC lever over. 996 and 986 Boxster stalks are exactly the same.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Kiwi and Richard H. These are just the answers I was looking for. I will go ahead and get the parts I require and get it fixed.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well I have been looking for a replacement for my stalks but have come up with another question. I am unable to find a used one anywhere that has the headlight washers on them. I was going to buy new from Design911 but I just have another quick question. I was going to order the 4 stalk unit as there is a possibility I will retro fit cruise at a later date. But I also wondered if the 2 stalk unit at under £80 would take my existing OBC? I am also still not sure if the ones from Design911 come with the headlight washer, I rang them and they weren't able to confirm, they just assumed that they did. Did all post 2001 cars come with them, I thought Xenon's were an option?

POST 8Original post

They all have the headlight washer switch on them. It is only the switch cap which might be different. You can swap the cap from your existing stalk. Yes - you can always retrofit cruise at a later date, at a cost of about £10 in parts if you already have the 4-lever stalk. And yes again - you could swap your OBC stalk onto a 2-lever stalk.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your invaluable help on this Richard H. I ordered a new 2 stalk switch gear from Design911 at £76 +VAT and I fitted it this afternoon. I just fitted my existing OBC stalk to the new one, saving about £70 and the whole job took less that an hour to do, quite an easy fix. The old indicator switch is not going be able to repaired as the little plastic bit that had broken off is an odd shape. It could be taken apart easy enough and re-riveted back together but plastic welding the repair would not be worth doing.

POST 10Original post

sorry for bumping up this old thread, actually i can't help myself to say thank you since this post helps me a lot in fixing my car. i got troubled in my auto repair manuals , actually i can't understand the my car manual. i can't find any way on how to fix my indicator. so when i see this post, and tried it, well i am happy to say that my car is now working. thanks for the very helpful post.

POST 11Original post

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead again, but im looking to replace my stalk as it has gone on the blink today. When looking at the online parts PDF there appears to be 4 versions (as mentioned above) but not sure which part number i should be looking for. Mine just has the single stalk either side The 4 possible part numbers as listed on the parts PDF are 1) 996 613 219 10 2) 996 613 217 10 3) 996 613 215 10 4) 996 613 213 10 After doing a search online (ebay & google images) im still none the wiser. Thanks (Oh BTW - its a 2001 C4)

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is the link to the stalks on Design911. http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt199...-911--1997-05/Indicator---Wiper-Stalk-Switch/ Your 2 stalk one is listed as "standard vehicle"

POST 13Original post

You might aswell get CC and OBC coded too (see WrightTune): http://www.wrightune.co.uk/ Check out "Retrofits" on the LHS menu. £580, but bear in mind the stalk assembly is approx £200 OEM. Cruise control is applicable to both Manual and Tip models. Although the OBC stalk is independent (it may be added to any stalk assembly which is missing it), neither the indicators nor the cruise control are and must be bought as complete units. There are four options (option value rises with part number) 1) Indicators and wipers (OBC may be added) - 996.613.213 2) Indicators and wipers, OBC Fitted - 996.613.215 2) Indicators and wipers and cruise (OBC may be added) - 996.613.217 3) Indicators and wipers and cruise and OBC - 996.613.219

POST 14Original post

oh FFS this has happened to me today. New part seems to be £500. Weirdly what I would expect as the most common option with just OBC is most expensive? Anyway I found a used part for £110 so I am running with that. Not sure I fancy messing with the steering wheel and airbag myself for the sake of 90mins labour and not setting off the airbag or refitting steering wheel wrong and then crashing and dying ;-)

POST 15Original post

Okay just so I read this right you can use a two stalk set up and just attach the OBC stalk to it? My indicator switch went on the way back home today and Im not looking at getting cruise so just want to transfer over existing OBC stalk if that's possible.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
