Unfortunately the reason I am refreshing the interior is due to a serious mice infestation.

He had a console to strip and paint (right switch for the top) and we met at his shop, and swapped the body-color painted one for the ugly scarred-up blue one I had.

The scuffed parts you replaced - due to the scuffing I assume - they were all soft-touch paint.

The solvent in the paint I used caused the old finish to wrinkle up, so stripping them was required.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine is a dark blue interior and a Carrara White exterior - don't dismiss white out of hand, I think it looks quite handsome and would look fine with Sand Beige..

They load fast, people don't have to click through to see them and they look just as good. These are 1/4 the size of the originals.
And I like the look.... I see your dash trim was also painted, let me see if I can find a photo of the finished product (new wheel, painted console/trim, new radio, etc..) of mine..
Found it! Current state:
I obviously like the look.. I think it would look great on the beige interior.
Don, the few times I've looked at a
Cayman
R (circa 2012) I immediately noticed the body color parts in the interior. Is what you are showing, and what the original poster is after, basically the same thing? In the R, do they just apply paint to a stock plastic console and the horizontal trim strips across the dash?
HUMMM, that might be another winter project. The white is interesting but I'm thinking silver might work better with my sand beige. I could also paint some of the other trim silver to match existing accents.
I suspect that they just use body paint for the parts they wanted body color. This was also done on the pumpkin 2008 special (lipstick-pig)
Boxster
model. In that case it was the orange/pumpkin color paint.
On mine - I found a guy who did this sort of painting at a reasonable price. He had a console to strip and paint (right switch for the top) and we met at his shop, and swapped the body-color painted one for the ugly scarred-up blue one I had.
For the dash trim, I tracked down a used set, sent them to him, he painted them, and shipped them back to me. Piece of cake to swap. Each of these items was available from
Porsche
, pre-painted in the Carrara White - at horrendous prices.
Porsche
did make these for the "Design Edition" (another lipstick-pig car*..)
Total for me - about $500 for all of it. I personally love the look. Worth every penny IMHO.
BTW - on the Pumpkin special - I'm still looking for a set of wheels - that look like:
And yes - I know these are just a fancy paint job on stock sport rims, but if possible I'd love to find the OE ones. If someone has a set of the stock rims unmodified and unscarred - I'd be interested but they'd have to be reasonably priced since they'd have to be refinished.

* = Lipstick-Pig-Car... Porsche has a long tradition of creating "special editions" of cars that are going out of production, so they can clear out the inventory once the new replacement car has been announced. My first experience with this was my '06 Cayenne "Titanium Edition" - where Porsche announced the 2008 face-lifted Cayenne and didn't sell the 2007 model in the US. Instead - they had the "Titanium" special edition. The Pumpkin Boxster (which I love the look of) and the Design Edition (which I'm emulating on mine) are two more examples of Lipstick Porsches.. the funny part is - these often become quite collectible (Pumpkins commonly bring $40-50k) due to odd colors and/or a dash plaque. In the auto biz, this sort of model was often referred to by salesmen talking among themselves as the "Lipstick on a Pig", pretty up the pig and move it off the inventory. It works, so can't really argue with it.
Question: on a Sand Beige console, what is the color of the plastic under the beige paint? I'm thinking of just stripping it and sanding it to a dull/matte finish- never have to deal with chips or scratches in the paint. Just buff them out as needed.
I know you are interested in aesthetics at this point but bear in mind that getting paint onto any plastic is actually more difficult than painting metal. If you are talking about the bare plastic out of its mold, an adhesion promoter is required to get the topcoat to stick. The adhesion promoter used depends on the type of plastic and that can be difficult to determine. On the other hand, if you have a nicely factory painted piece, a very light scuff that does not break through the factory top coat should provide a good base for most rattle can products typically sold such as Duplicolor. But it will never be as durable as the factory topcoat.
Based on my sample size of two cars, the raw pieces are black.
BTW, a nice quick job is to buy the plastic piece that goes around the opening for the ignition key. It can be had from the dealer, only in black. Try your hand at painting it to match. You will learn some techniques, maybe some things that don't work, on a piece that is relatively inexpensive and always beat to hell. To remove the piece, just gently pry around the edges.

Actually - that surround for the key can be had in any color the console came in from Porsche. They're all listed in the complete parts PDF for the car. It's also available in several colors of leather (for large $$$). I'm thinking of asking for a Carrara white one for Christmas. Last year I got a replacement sea-blue one, but it pretty much disappears into the sea-blue dash. I think white to match the trim strips and console might be just the thing...
BTW - the rest of your post is wonderful, I didn't mean to detract from it by this comment. There is a company that will make up spray cans of Porsche paint colors and also sell a clearcoat to match. For the DIY'er they'd be where I'd look for paint rather than Duplicolor.
Let me go to the garage and find the name of the company.. right back..
the company is "Touch Up Direct"

BTW - have you tried painting over the standard soft-touch finish Porsche used? I did try it with no success when I was doing the trim strips. The solvent in the paint I used caused the old finish to wrinkle up, so stripping them was required. The other option for the trim strips is to wrap them... I did that with one set with reasonable (not perfect) results. There are a few hard corners on those pieces that make it difficult to get the wrap material on smoothly.
Don, at this point I can't recall but I did buy two of the key opening pieces within the last year and what I got was black. It is possible that the cost and availability of the ones in color caused me to go with black. As you can see from the article, I was quite comfortable painting them myself. No, I have not tried painting the soft-touch items, if by that you mean the control knobs for the HVAC. They are pretty delicate. Ours original got destroyed after my wife went through one of the drive through detail places.
Even as I was typing Duplicolor I was getting chills. Some of their paints are lacquer based, although you would never know it by the labels, and will cause wrinkling. But they are prolific. Thanks for your alternate recommendation.
Hi Harvey,
By soft touch - I mean the finish used on places like the console and switch control panels in the door. It's a soft sort of finish rather than a hard-feeling one. The trim bits that wrinkled up on me weren't soft-touch - they were that rather ugly silver/gray paint that Porsche pretended looked like metal. I'm on a campaign to remove that wherever I can on my '09.
The control knobs on the 09 and newer cars aren't subject to the failing finish like the pre-09 cars were. That seems to be a hard flat finish, seems to hold up quite well.
I can recommend Touch Up Direct since I had some interaction with them over a confused color order.. turns out there is a Carrara white metallic and a plain Carrara white. Of course, I ordered the wrong stuff, but they were very understanding and helpful with it.
Got it. No, I haven't tackled the soft touch material you are describing. There are a lot of "soft touch" materials in new cars these days. They give ever so slightly when depressed with your finger. Lord only knows what they are made of and how they would react to painting.
The scuffed parts you replaced - due to the scuffing I assume - they were all soft-touch paint. And that's what happens, it doesn't take much to damage that paint especially as it gets older. People have done reasonable repairs to that sort of scuffing by taking a piece of the painted plastic to a paint store that has a spectrometer to measure the color (and determine the mix to match it) and having some satin finish latex paint made in the color. Not perfect, but with the price of the replacement parts from
Porsche
it might seem a worthwhile solution if you're not seeking a concourse condition.
Good comment on paint adhesion. I've got a 1998 F-150 that had brown paint peeling off the plastic on the dash. It had so little adhesion that when I finally decided to strip it, I was able to remove most of the paint with compressed air! I sandblasted the smooth black plastic and repainted it with Duplicolor wrinkle finish in the original color. It has looked great for years now.
