Well, after finally getting my hands on a 996, immediately took it for all the brake pipes to be replaced along with 4 new tyres (had to wait 5 weeks) my drive lasted 70 miles before the engine started knocking!

Suggestion

Got to be more cost effective fixing, having a fun year using the guarantee period and shuffling on next year, than selling in its current state?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Evening all. Well, after finally getting my hands on a 996, immediately took it for all the brake pipes to be replaced along with 4 new tyres (had to wait 5 weeks) my drive lasted 70 miles before the engine started knocking! Not the best start to Porsche ownership, 16k in and feeling very angry, disappointed, sick to be honest. I feel like torching it 😂.

POST 2Original post

not a great start! I'm sorry that your dream has turned into a nightmare, these cars can cost some money, sounds like you have done some homework and sorted one of the common issues with the 996. Any ideas on why its knocking?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive had the sump plate off, some brass/bronze particles and in powder form. Along with some larger magnetic bits. I've bore scoped it and bored appear ok, however it looks as if piston 2 is damaged. But old damage, I feel certain it's a big end. I bought it because it had good history, with an engine rebuild only 8k ago..

POST 5Original post

Bad news. Sorry to hear it. I steer people away from early watercooled to the more expensive MY09 997 gen 2 with the DFI engine. I read these posts with regular monotony. Hope you get it sorted.

POST 6Original post

Sorry I can't add anything constructive but I do hope you get it sorted without damaging your bank account too much. I take it there's no come back anywhere? Ie engine under warranty or to the seller?

POST 7Original post

Sorry to hear this, probably a silly question but did you get a PPI before buying the car?

POST 9Original post

Do you think the previous owner would have been aware of the problem and wanted to pass it on. Did the engine rebuild have a warranty and is it related? Did you get a comprehensive PPI? Sorry to hear about your misfortune, small consultation but your car looks nice though.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not sure if the owner knew. He certainly doesn't want to know now!

POST 11Original post

Hi Man, that is just awful. Cars can be Russian roulette, and even more so with the early watercooled Porsches. Its the sword of Damocles that hangs over all of us. Hope you find some sort of resolution that is not toooooo painful. Berni

POST 12Original post

Can I ask how you are 16k into a car that is worth 10 or less? I know the members on here will say that 10k is rubbish but thats only cause theyre bigging up their own cars. A1998 996 is sub 10k.

POST 13Original post

Of course they knew........ But proving it? Plenty of options for different engine re-builders. You don't necessarily have to go the whole hog either. Companies will do what you want to fix. I.e. one piston and sleeve, etc. Might be handy to know what was fixed (or not) last time. Got to be more cost effective fixing, having a fun year using the guarantee period and shuffling on next year, than selling in its current state?

POST 14Original post

Err......because the price he paid for it, plus work he's had done, plus 4 new tyres comes to £16k. Cazana valuation is £16,292 - £17,340.

POST 15Original post

Funny! I've looked for a 996 aero on several sites and I can't see any advertised for less than £10k. Most around £15k What's yours worth?
