This heavier grade of oil is I believe what Hartech recommend for their rebuilt engines and I think I remember seeing that Porsche are now recommending this for 996s.

I've had my car exactly one year now and I did a full oil change immediately on it using Mobil 5w40 oil. So the car has now done almost exactly 5000 miles since that time bringing the total mileage up to 95000. My question is....should I do another oil change? Is 5000 miles just the start for the oil or would a change help preserve the engine for future use?

Hi Yearly is reasonable. You could leave the filters if it makes the difference between you changing it or not. If the 5k was a lot of short trips the def change both. If it was less frequent but much longer motorway style trips then much less need. Changing the oil regularly is a good thing and will certainly help to prolong the life of the engine. Thats my opinion! Berni

You might also consider going to 10w50 grade oil if you do a change. This heavier grade of oil is I believe what Hartech recommend for their rebuilt engines and I think I remember seeing that Porsche are now recommending this for 996s. I believe the idea is that the heavier grade of oil gives a bit more safety margin for oil fil stability if things ever get a bit hot around the cylinders. Please feel free to correct me on the above if I've got it wrong though!

I'm a disciple of the Baz @ Hartech's doctrine, Millers Nano 10w 50 in your 9x6 era cars. Ran Millers 5w 40 in my 987 that had 45-60k on the clock in my ownership. Topped up the oil once (400ml) outside of the yearly change cycle.
