My 12 black edition with 80k on it has quite the pitted windscreen. On a lark I used Safelites online configurator to see what oop cost would be and found it to be quite inexpensive. Only about $330.
Has anyone used them for a replacement. I have the internal antennas L/C/R. No rain sense..
Into the sun it’s pretty annoying TBH..thanks!!
I had mine replaced by them - twice. Mine had a big enough stone pit in it that my comprehensive insurance covered replacing it, and I keep $50/deductible on comprehensive, so the cost to me was minimal.
My insurance company suggested Safelite (owned by Allstate Insurance actually) - so I went there and gave them a shot at it. They used the $300 windshield - it's aftermarket by a large maker of replacement glass (not OE glass). It was fine, except it wasn't quite the right shape and the two upper corners sat differently from the rest of the windshield.
I took it back to them and asked that they fix the problem, they tried but really couldn't do much about it. SO.. I told them I wanted OE glass. That glass cost about 3x the cost of the original non-OE glass, but it fit perfectly. My insurance company agreed to pay for the OE glass. I don't know who paid for the unsuccessful windshield installation.
So that's my story.
You might lower your comprehensive insurance deductible just in case you were following too close behind a truck that tossed a rock at your windshield. Mine cost about $10/year to go from a $500 deductible to a $50 deductible. That's paid for itself through the years...
FWIW - most really pitted windshields I've seen are usually on cars owned by people who are somewhat impatient and tend to tailgate. That's a really bad thing to do behind trucks of any kind since their wheels/
tires
pick up anything on the road and throw it back at you. I always try to stay several car lengths behind them in moving traffic to give the debris they toss up time to settle before it attacks my windshield. That said - all windshields are a PITA with the sun streaming in at you (driving west at near sunset) by the time they reach 100k miles.
Root canal or windshield replacement? I hate windshield work. It's an easy job to go wrong with the wrong glass or bad installer. Then there's the SafeLite monopoly. My advice is to stick with Porsche glass, but also get a Protective film to avoid replacements. These cars do sit low and are subject to more projectile contact of various sizes. Over here in Berks county we have route 422 which has a non existent left shoulder and a concrete median where all of the flotsam accumulates only to be aerosolized and thrown into one's path whenever one is in the left lane. It's like sandblasting.
had the windshield on my
2008 Cayman S
replaced by Safelite after a rock strike left a big star in front of the driver. They did a good job. The new windshield had a different in glass antenna location which was a bit annoying until I got used to it. They did the repair in my driveway and did not mess up anything else doing the repair. We've also had them replace a cracked windshield on a 2007 Toyota 4Runner and they also did a good job on that repair.
Do some research about your local safelight location. My neighbor discovered vast differences between two locations. The first replacement in his Tacoma leaked like the Exxon Valdez. Second location? Fixed what location one could not find after return visits in one visit.
Well I knew it was prob too good to be true. Thankfully it’s not requiring replacement or even repairs, but I’d consider replacement out of pocket if I were confident the cheaper one would work well. Dons experience gives me pause and I called Safelite and asked what the cost of OEM would be and it was over $900. I need to buy a dust cover for storage soon so will hold off on the glass for now..
What is the difference in the embedded antennas? I’ve got one in the middle and also one in each side. I’m assuming they are for AM and FM..
That sounds like the full diversity antenna system. I have yet to figure out why some cars came with this and others didn't. All of the antennas go to an antenna amplifier (located above the radio cage somewhere) that picks the antenna with the best signal amplifies it and sends it on to the headunit. This is designed to eliminate what was called "fence-posting" in early FM car radios - where the signal varied in strength vs location rapidly and as you moved along with only a single antenna it moved in and out of the signal causing the radio to fade in and out quickly. By using multiple antennas with an amplifier capable of figuring out which antenna has the strongest signal that effect was greatly eliminated. Some 987s have it - some don't. Why? Dunno.. mine has SPP - and it doesn't have multiple antennas - just one in the center of the windshield.
I have $200 deductible comprehensive on all my cars with The Hartford through AARP, which included full glass zero deductible coverage. Always had that option added. Well worth it. I have needed to replace windshields on every car I have owned at some point due to impacts or pitting. Pebble pitting is covered if bad enough too.
Actually, I just used the coverage to replace a windshield on my 2020 Mercedes SUV. Online claim, at Safelite next day, new windshield installed in an hour, and on the road again. Probably not OEM glass, but all looked fine to me, so nothing bad to say about Safelite from my experience. Don't know about the Porsche glass replacements but I would like feedback if anyone has any. I expect that I may a new windshield for my 981 as well at some point.
As a recommendation to get this coverage on the cheap, check out AARP. I left State Farm Insurance after 40 years and switched to The Hartford through them and took advantage of the AARP auto insurance discount. Saved 50% on my premiums. Really, no exaggeration! You should all check this benefit out if you are old enough to be an AARP member. Well worth it for that discount alone.
You might ask them the difference between $200 deductible comprehensive and $50 deductible in your rate. Mine costs about an extra $15/year per car. Some companies may require having your collision deductable match the comprehensive (mine doesn't) and some companies may no longer offer $50/deductible for any coverage at all (I'm grandfathered on this - I've been with the same company for about 50 years now..)
