Hi all,
I would like to find out attitudes towards yearly mileage in your Porsche. Can you say your year of car, current mileage number and how much you drive it per year.
I’ll start:
Mine’s an 08 and the current mileage is 55,485. I average 2.5k per year.
I’m looking forward to finding out how often you use your Porsche 👌🏻
My 06 Boxster S had 127k miles on it when I got it in April '21 and I put 28k miles on it in the following 2 years before it was involved in an accident. Drove it every day EXCEPT when the roads were freshly salted or wet in the winter here in KCMO.
Cheers,
Julian
Mine's an '06 Boxster S that had 32K miles on it when I bought it in 7/21. It now has almost 38K miles now. Which reminds me, I need to do an oil change!
I don't know how you guys can resist driving them...
Thats some mad mileage, but 14k a year seems reasonable.
That’s impressive. So you’ve done about 2k per year. Quality👌🏻
It depends on the Porsche imo. If you buy one with high mileage one should just thrash it around as the value will mean nothing. If it’s an older version with low mileage it needs a bit more care and respect imo. Plus you keep the value up👌🏻
My 2008 Cayman has 64,000 or so miles and I've owned it for just approximately 14 1/2 years. Had 3,000 miles on it when I bought it so that looks like I'm averaging about 4,200 or so miles per year. As a retiree, with pretty much nowhere to go everyday, I'm surprised I do as many miles as I do. Oh and I still love it as much as the first day I owned it.
My wife's car, purchased new in 2006, now has 75,000. She used to be motivated to drive it to work at least 9 months out of the year (we're in NC) but over the years she tends to see an accident every day on her commute so I think now she will only drive it during non-rush hours.
I put 8500 miles on my new to me 2007 CS last year but that was all done in one month driving to the west coast and back.
I bought my '09 Cayman in Feb '22, and in just over 18 months put on 5K miles. I work remotely and have to deal with DC traffic, so my trips aren't that frequent or long, but I do take it to the gym and drive around on most weekends. It's always good for a smile, even in DC traffic.
2014 Boxster S, purchased used in 2016 with 22000 miles and now has 92000 miles.
I bought it for my daily driver with an eye on doing HPDEs. I had been driving about 15000/yr and ~5 track weekends/yr until COVID. Since COVID, I bought a dedicated race car and transitioned to work from home, so have only put on about 4000/yr and a couple track weekends over the past 3 years.
The car had been wrecked and repaired before I bought it. Because of the blemished history, I got a great deal on it, and thusly I've never been concerned about diminished value from driving lots of miles and track days. TBH I almost prefer it that way because I drive it and enjoy it guilt-free at every opportunity.
I bought my CS new in 2007.Now has 71,000 miles so about 4,400 miles per year.
'08 Bought new. Only has 15,000 miles....I know, I need to drive it!
What is it? I assume the value on a low mileage Porsche like that is quite impressive.
I guess I just drive when I feel like it. Generally speaking, mileage doesn't factor much into my decision making, unless it's extreme. Living in Boston, driving can be difficult -- but love it when I do. What concerns me more, to be quite honest, is my carbon footprint and how much I'm spending at the gas pump -- so I try and strike a balance. If I'm going to drive, I just go do it and just enjoy myself thoroughly when I do.
I think that although our cars are assets that might not depreciate like other marques, the amount saved by low mileage at a future point of sale will likely pretty low in the grand scheme of things. People may throw rocks at me for saying this, but there seem to be plenty of P-car fans that get hung up on a lot of OCD stuff -- with "excess mileage" being squarely one of them.
Examples
:
For years, I used to regularly drive a 250 mile round trip to/from my folks' place before they sold it. Most of the 23K miles I put on my former 987.1S (over a few years) was that trip. I didn't think twice about the mileage and I sold that car at 91K. Mileage wasn't much of an issue in the end; it was a fun daily driver.
My currently daily driver (largely my winter car) 987.2 Boxster 2.9 has 256K miles on it. I sleep really well at night knowing that I can do an insanely long car trip with it, and adding to the mileage actually adds to the WOW factor. It's a badge of honor, to be quite honest. As long as the car is up for the trip, that's squarely my long-distance car.
My 981 Outlaw 3.8L (991.1S) is really a show car and an investment piece, and that is something I'm admittedly more careful about mileage about. It's currently at 45K, with about 37K on the 911 engine. I just did a super-long trip to Maine and back in it, and it was really great fun. Would I currently think twice about driving to FL and back in it (3K miles)? Yes. But everyday trips? Not really. Meanwhile, my concerns are potholes here in town. I do have to sorta' keep an eye on the mileage on this one, as it really is an unusual car that some buyer may be OCD about. Whatever. But let's hope I'll be enjoying it for many years to come...
I've driven a BMW E30 convertible for the past 25 years. Going from ~48K to ~116K, the mileage never worried me much and it's not going to affect the sale price when I do sell it within the year. Just drive your car and enjoy it.
One key thing to note is that I'm thankfully not a commuter. If I did, my 987.2 would be the commuter car without question. But also being eco and given Boston's infrastructure, most of the time -- I'm on my Vespa for local stuff anyhow. For years, I've always kept the mileage low anyhow, given that I distribute my riding between cars, motorcycles, Vespas, and just plain walking.
I don't commute either so this is another factor keeping miles down on my cars. I have a pickup truck in addition to the Boxster and daily driver, and the motorcycle hasn't even been on the road for a few years!
I bought my car 7-8 years ago with 15,000 miles 2010 CS PDK, I started HPDE in 2018 I am now kinda bord driving it on the street, I do about 4,000 track miles and 1,000 street mile a year, currently 55,000 miles.
Aside from a 1,300+ mile drive from FL to NJ after purchasing the car back in April (2005 Boxster 2.7 @ 71000), I have been averaging approx. 500 miles a month so far.
In the past 6 months I've driven the Boxster 13,000 km and with my upcoming drive to Rennsport Reunion that will add another 7,000 km. This plus other driving will make this a 24K km year (15K miles), which is about double my usual.
As the car gets older I do think more about wear and tear, but just from a reliability perspective not depreciation, as it's now 15 years old and at a low point on the depreciation curve.
Got my 15' Cayman 2.7L in March of this year with 76,000mi on it. Currently it's at 81,500. It's my only car pretty much and I work from home, I just like driving everywhere in it, also took a trip up to Chicago and back so that added at least 1500mi to it.
Nice! Great to hear the high mileage mark. Points to the longevity of the MA1 engine.
14 cayman base. Bought last august. Put 8k on in one year, with maybe 400 miles where I was going somewhere. The rest was just hooning around listening to that sweet 2.7 flat six. Currently have 39k. This is a drivers car and it will be driven whenever I can.
I drive it whenever I want to - winter, snow, rain, doesn't matter. It was our second car so it was effectively my daily driver. I own my own company so I work from home primarily, but I take longer trips to customers as far as Maryland. I just enjoy driving it, so why not. I never needed to have a "trailer queen" and the body isn't "perfect"... I don't care. I live in CT, as well.
Anyway, bought it at 73k miles a little over 2 years ago. Just passed 100k miles on the last trip (work in southern NJ). So that's 27k in about 2 years, or 13k per year. It may not see as much going forward, since we have 3 cars now... but we'll see.
I presume they salt the roads up in CT, do you notice much corrosion starting on your fasteners etc? Where did you car live before you? I tried to avoid salt with mine while I had it as it was so clean underneath having been a southern car and I see all the other Kansas City cars and trucks being trashed by salt. Having said that, my Lexus GS400 that I got when living in Phoenix that is my snow day car is still pretty clean underneath. I do make a habit of pressure washing under our cars at least once a week in the winter to try and minimize the salt damage.
I think my new Cayman will be a 365 car.
Cheers,
Julian
2009 Cayman 6 seed purchased 12/20/20 w/ 40k miles. 50,451 as of today 09/26/23. What's that roughly 5k per year?
I am in a similar situation. 2008 Cayman S with about 64k miles. I retired about 10 years ago, so I have to work hard to put about 2k miles on it annually. I put more than triple the miles on my bike every year than on my Porsche.
2021 GT4 (manual). Bought it with 8k on odometer in Nov 21. It now has 19.8k on odometer. I drive it everywhere unless I need my RAM 1500 for hauling capacity. I bought it to drive - not to be an ornament in my garage.
Hi. 2009 987.2 base manual. 32,000 miles, about 2.5k per yr.
bought it in 2019 with 23k From the 3rd owner. No inspection, few records, very good price. Just paid his loan balance!
Yes, it was a risk, but it was very clean, and very smooth running up to the redline. So far I’ve only been stranded with a broken shifter cable. I do oil and filters myself.
2015 Cayman GTS - bought it at 25,000 kms and now have 35,000kms on it. That is 2 years of driving, so around 5000kms per year. Have not used it as much as I would have liked due to having to do a lot of business trips in my van, but once I retire, I expect the mileage to go up to over 20,000 per year. It is so much fun to drive.
I put a fair number of miles on my 2008 the first few years I owned it, but the past few years I had been averaging about 650.
Mine is a 2009 987.2 Base 6 speed that I bought in 2015 with about 20k on the clock, from the 3rd owner. I currently have 46k on it and drive about 3k a year.
2018 Cayman bought in July with 52k currently 54300 It wants to be driven.
2014 Cayman S. Bought 2 yrs ago with 14435. Odometer now showing 32453.
