The other thing to note is that when/if you do end up with two working remote keys, alternate the use of them occasionally as otherwise the security paranoid computer seems to permanently disable the non-used key.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My new 996 only has the one key which I never like on a car.
I got a spare for my BMW from someone independent who got his work from the forums and was far cheaper than the dealer. Is there someone like that who is commonly used for 996 keys?
Cheers
Simon
Crazy if that's the case
This Beemer guy was great, he booked a load in the northwest for that day and came to my work and took about 30 mins to sort me a new key

Hi
I have been on this merry go round with my 986 recently. The cheapest you can get a proper remote key is £300 approx. Or £350 from the OPC.
What I did was forego the remote and had a key made for £60 at a local locksmith who knows what he is doing.

I'm on this merry go round at present, and will hopefully find out later this week whether new key heads resolve my problem. I could live with the lack of remote locking if it did like every other car and unlocked the passenger door when you unlock the drivers door with the key.
At present, if I want to open the passenger door I need to unlock the drivers door, quickly insert the key and turn on the ignition to prevent the alarm going off, then get into the car AND close the drivers door, and only then can I unlock the passenger door via the dash button. Mad.
This is just one of the quirks of the platform and seems like something we just have to live with. The other thing to note is that when/if you do end up with two working remote keys, alternate the use of them occasionally as otherwise the security paranoid computer seems to permanently disable the non-used key.
Have a look at my recent thread on this very same issue. A new key from Porsche Australia is AU$450 (divide by 2 to get BP). I found my local Indy got it for $350 and had all the learn codes to connect it to the new CU. He did the job very well.
Mine does this too. The reason (as far as I can rationalise it) is that opening the door with the key simply opens the door, it doesn't turn off the alarm or operate the central locking. Putting the key in the ignition does then turn off the alarm but obviously doesn't activate the C/L.
What I do is key in door/key in ignition/key in door and unlock again which is a PITA but means you don't have to be in the drivers seat to activate the C/L,
It really is a hassle I need to get this fixed.
Thanks will give them a ring!
Bergvillfx sell a remote kit for 986/996 which can be wired in to unlock the car. Obviously you'd still need a key & transponder to start the car, however I'm not sure if the T-Lock remote fob would also disarm the alarm/immobiliser.
If anyone can confirm that this would also disarm the alarm, then it could be a cheaper & perhaps more permanent solution to the perennial 9x6 keyfob issues

Hi
Someone on Boxa.net is in the process of wiring up a cheap ebay remote keyfob to his 986 at the moment. The dust has not settled yet though.
Personally I cannot see how it could possibly disarm the alarm. You would still need to put the key in the ignition. It might do both doors though which would be a step forwards. Also I guess it would arm the alarm on locking. I think it could possibly do the frunk/trunk, but again the alarm is the issue.
Will be interesting to see how it pans out.
