Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Folks,
I am a newbie so please take it easy on me - I am thinking of buying a 911 Carrera 4 tiptronic 2000 and was wondering what i should look out for as part of the vehicle checks? What common issues are there with the older models? The car has a full porche service history from what i know and has only ever had one owner. Any advice and or guidance is greatly appreciated.
Mick

I've moved your post to the 996 sub-forum as it seems as though you're settled on the model of 911 you're interested in buying.
Have a good scroll down the thread topics in this sub-forum and also note the FAQs (at the bottom of the page). Potential 996 buyers are quite common so you'll find loads of questions have already been asked and answered. For your information the 3.4 is commonly known as the 996.1. The later 3.6 engined car is the 996.2
Once you're happy with what you can see about a specific car the ongoing advice is to have any potential purchase professionally checked over in a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI). The findings might allow you to walk away or hopefully negotiate a purchase price.
It sounds like you've already identified a likely purchase so 'Good Luck'. :thumb:
If it's a one owner car that makes it much easier as the owner should be able to tell you all about the history since the car was new or is it a garage selling?
As it's a 20 year old car then although good service history from new is important, it's probably more important to see what has been done more recently. So I'd check for things like any suspension work, coil packs, air con/cooling system work, brake lines etc as all are things that can corrode over time. If not replaced already then all of these may need attention.
Be aware that C4 and tiptronic will not add value. If that's what you want/need, fine, there's nothing wrong with either spec and of course each has their benefits - but do not be led into paying more for these additions.
Next up, there's plenty on here about wear and tear and what to look for, but personally I'd draw the line at rust, funny noises or smoke from the engine, weird electrical faults etc. These can sometimes be simple and cheap to sort but can also be an expensive nightmare. Brakes, suspension, cooling system and a/c is more or less bolt off / bolt on so although it may not be cheap, it should be straightforward (ish) and will refresh the car. Factor into price but wouldn't put me off the right car.
After that, and the usual checks, it's down to colour/options and do you like it?
FSH and one owner is nice, what's the mileage? At around an anecdotal 100,000 miles big things like the engine and gearbox will have significant (but not necessarily disastrous) wear.
Good luck!
