Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Install today' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'retainer not extending all the way' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check prices and coincidentally, i can order it direct' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Correct, on the early cars they were installed with an epoxy.

Suspected cause
I think the only reason I have any kind of gap at the front is due to the retainer not extending all the way to the very end as it stops about half an inch before the skirt curves round into the wheel well.

Suggestion · Original poster
It would be good to know in advance if I need to be looking for other fasteners or if there will only be molding tape to contend with once the screws running along the underside of the rockers are removed...

Suggestion
if I peer down the small gap at the top, I can just about see a long horizontal strip running the full length of the sill that feels solid and rigid if I poke it with a thin plastic spatula.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've tried a hair dryer on one end for ages to try and soften any adhesive on the adhesive tape I'm told is holding it on, but this makes no difference.
So, I'm definitely repainting or wrapping my side skirt.
Anyone know offhand if the screws under the car are the only mechanical fasteners? It would be good to know in advance if I need to be looking for other fasteners or if there will only be molding tape to contend with once the screws running along the underside of the rockers are removed...
There will also be either a molding tape or lip that is attached to a metal clip on the top of your sideskirts. Should be one screw on each end in the wheel well area as well.
If the skirts were installed at the factory, there would be a metal clip towards the top portion of the rockers that the sideskirts clip over. If it was a dealer installed option or PO installed it afterwards themselves, it could either have the clip or double sided tape.
I had to change one of them on my '02 and it was extremely easy. I doubt there is even a DIY on it. IIRC, there are about 6 screws and then some tabs to line up.
I just bought two used OEM side skirts. Of course, they didn't come with the factory hardware. Any advice how to install. I can see how to mount the ends of each side skirt to the fender's edge, but you all know, it has the a series of bolt holes. Do I drill out holes for screws or are they retaining clips to be mounted? Please help. I appreciate it!
I would get some 3m double sided autobody tape. Clean up the upper rocker portion of any wax/dirt.
Stick the tape along the top edge of the sideskirts.
DO NOT drill to mount sideskirts on the bottom side but instead get the proper plastic fasteners from Porsche which requires no drilling.
Install the bottom fasteners first. Then start peeling away the backing on the tape from the front side first. Slowly peel it away a little at a time while you're pressingi the sideskirt into place working towards the back.
Lastly, there is a screw in each wheel well IIRC.
Thanks Alpine! I really appreciate it! Do you by chance have a link to the proper Porsche fasteners? I'd rather just order it than driving down to Atlanta.
I was about to order the U-clamps and mounting screws from Pelican Parts thinking it would be cheaper over Porsche. But just happen to check prices and coincidentally, I can order it direct from Porsche in Atlanta for about 25% less. Go figure.
Alpine... dumb question here, but curious. You say use 3M double sided tape along the side of the skirts, but do you add any double stick tape to the the bottom (i.e. under the car), along the line of the clamp holes?
Just got the side skirts installed today. They look fabulous and good news... the paint matches and I'm glad I didn't have to get them repainted. But the install was pretty painless. Thank you all for the advice and assistance.
Good news... the side skirts installed without much trouble. Thank you all! I was especially impressed how tight the fit was... Porsche states their OEM side skirts align with car's lower edge better than aftermarket brands and after viewing some comparisons online, I agree with them. I'm happy to be able to find some OEM versions with the correct paint color from a dismantler on eBay. Anyway, here's the picture. (Hope you're happy DT!)
Bad news... after removing the rear Michelins to install the side skirts, this is what I found ... Ouch! Looks like replacement is the next thing on list.
Sorry to resurrect a thread from the dead, but I'm trying to remove the skirts off my 996.1 and struggling.
I've removed all the clips and screws underneath and at each end and I can pull the bottom of the skirt away from the original sill without too much force, but it soon runs out of flex as the top side of the sill is stuck to the original sill.
It hinges to a certain degree, but will not pull or pry free.
I've tried easing it from both ends, but it gets to the point that I don't want to bend or flex it any further for fear of breaking or cracking it.
I've tried a hair dryer on one end for ages to try and soften any adhesive on the adhesive tape I'm told is holding it on, but this makes no difference.
if I peer down the small gap at the top, I can just about see a long horizontal strip running the full length of the sill that feels solid and rigid if I poke it with a thin plastic spatula. I'm not sure what this is and cannot find any photographs of the install process anywhere on the internet to identify what this might be.
Could anyone guide me on what to do next, as I don't want to break the mouldings, but do want to remove them. Is there some sort of technique I'm missing?
Thanks!
Even on the early cars? My research this evening has suggested that they might be bonded in place with epoxy into the retaining strip?
I've inserted a credit card dowen the very fine gap at the top and it just bottoms out hard against the retaining strip, so I can't get access to whatever it is that is holding it in place. Whatever it is, I reckon I'd snap the skirt before it would give way.
I've left a hair dryer on one end for a good few minutes until it was as hot as I was comfortable heating it to, but made no difference whatsoever.
The gap at the top is too narrow to get an implement in at the required angle to get past the thickness of the retaining strip. Af full bend and manipulation, I've got maybe up to 1.5mm - 2mm gap at the very front, with and little to zero gap along most of the length. I think the only reason I have any kind of gap at the front is due to the retainer not extending all the way to the very end as it stops about half an inch before the skirt curves round into the wheel well.
It might be that I just accept they aren't coming off. I just thought there might be some first hand experience of removing these on early epoxy affixed examples.
