Now that I have put in a couple of litres of water, do I need to completely drain the system and refill only with Porsche coolant on replacing the tank?

Hi guys, never rains but it pours! Looks like this is the year for some serious money! C4 '00, had a coolant leak this weekend and light came on flashing. As I was out and about I topped up with water, about 1.5-2 litres. Found it to be the expansion tank leaking somewhere unaccessible on the rear at a steady thin stream, so needs to be replaced. On searching forums and workshop manual, i see it says the system is lifetime filled at factory and mustn't be mixed on topping up. Now that I have put in a couple of litres of water, do I need to completely drain the system and refill only with Porsche coolant on replacing the tank? Does the drain plug on the engine empty all coolant from rads as well? How much coolant is needed to refill. Steve :sad:

Don't panic, 8) Coolant is diluted anyway with water and adding a little tap water isn't going to do any harm. It does appear that you have a leak, probably on the tank or cap, whitish stains show up on the body work. Older ones are well documented to split when they get to about 10 years old, mine did last year. Get the car booked in to a garage and have it sorted out. It may also be a good time to have the oil filler nozel replaced as well as these are also plastic and are prone to cracking. TB

you should be able to get away with just replacing lost coolant when the tank is changed over..... i would get it into and indy as the engine may need to be lowered to get the unit out without damaging anything
